Entropy of Branching Out: Linear versus Branched Alkylthiols Ligands on CdSe Nanocrystals

Orian Elimelech et al.

Summary: The surface ligands of semiconductor nanocrystals play a crucial role in their colloidal stability and physicochemical properties. In this study, the impact of the ligand chain backbone structure on the thermodynamics of the exchange reaction for oleate coated CdSe NCs was investigated. The results showed that branched ligands have lower exothermicity and entropy loss compared to linear ligands, due to steric hindrance in ligand packing. The findings suggest that a short, branched ligand with a short branching group located toward the middle of the ligand chain is the most entropic ligand.

Efficient quasi-stationary charge transfer from quantum dots to acceptors physically-adsorbed in the ligand monolayer

Lei Yang et al.

Summary: Alkanoate-coated CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield are utilized for studying quasi-stationary charge transfer dynamics. The study reveals that the charge transfer rate ranges from single-digit nanoseconds to sub-nanoseconds, providing potential applications in photocatalysis and photovoltaic devices.

Probing molecular motions in metal-organic frameworks with solid-state NMR

Yao Fu et al.

Summary: Molecular motions in MOFs involve various phenomena such as gas sorption, linker rotation, ion diffusion, and chemical reactions. SSNMR is a unique tool that can capture dynamic pictures across a wide range of time scales to understand these motional processes. Different SSNMR strategies are required to accurately characterize molecular motions in MOFs based on their different motion regimes.

Revealing the Surface Structure of CdSe Nanocrystals by Dynamic Nuclear Polarization-Enhanced 77Se and 113Cd Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Yunhua Chen et al.

Summary: Dynamic nuclear polarization solid-state NMR spectroscopy was used to study the surface structures of zinc blende CdSe nanocrystals capped with carboxylic acid ligands. The experiments revealed the coordination environments of Cd and Se atoms on the surface, as well as the connectivity between them, confirming the predominant presence of CdSe2O2 and SeCd4 species. This methodology can be generally applied to obtain detailed surface structures of various main group semiconductor nanoparticles.

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Bernd Reif et al.

Summary: Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an atomic-level method to determine the chemical structure, 3D structure, and dynamics of solids and semi-solids, with most high-resolution solid-state NMR spectra measured under magic-angle spinning (MAS). Common experiments and data analysis approaches in solid-state NMR are summarized, highlighting applications in biology, chemistry, and materials sciences.
