Comparison of Random Forest and Support Vector Machine Classifiers for Regional Land Cover Mapping Using Coarse Resolution FY-3C Images

Tesfaye Adugna et al.

Summary: The type of algorithm used for remote sensing image classification has a significant impact on accuracy. In this paper, the performance of random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms in large area land cover mapping using coarse-resolution images was compared. The results showed that RF outperformed SVM, especially in mixed class classification and handling large input datasets.

Classifying vegetation communities karst wetland synergistic use of image fusion and object-based machine learning algorithm with Jilin-1 and UAV multispectral images

Bolin Fu et al.

Summary: Fine classification of wetland vegetation communities using machine learning algorithm and high spatial resolution images has been studied in this research. The challenges in image fusion, data dimension reduction and algorithm tuning have been addressed. The results showed that the fusion image achieved higher overall accuracy than the original multispectral image, the UAV multispectral image and its derivatives achieved the highest overall accuracy, and the optimized LightGBM algorithm outperformed the other two algorithms. The average accuracy of vegetation communities in karst wetlands ranged from 60% to 90%.

Jianjun Chen et al.

Summary: This study validates the accuracies of two FVC products in alpine grassland ecosystems through direct validation and multi-scale validation. The results show that the validated accuracy differs between the two methods, and the heterogeneity of the monitoring plots has a significant impact on the validation results. Therefore, future product validation should consider the impact of validation methods and the heterogeneity of the monitoring plots on the results.

Quantifying plant-soil-nutrient dynamics in rangelands: Fusion of UAV hyperspectral-LiDAR, UAV multispectral-photogrammetry, and ground-based LiDAR-digital photography in a shrub-encroached desert grassland

Joel B. Sankey et al.

Summary: Rangelands cover 70% of the world's land surface and play a critical role in providing ecosystem services. Utilizing UAV remote sensing techniques allows for the detection of fine-scale changes in soil nutrients and plant species in degraded rangelands. Combining UAV multispectral and LiDAR technology improves the accuracy of classifying plant functional types and soil fertility microsite types, providing valuable insights for better management of rangeland ecosystems.

Object-Based Wetland Vegetation Classification Using Multi-Feature Selection of Unoccupied Aerial Vehicle RGB Imagery

Rui Zhou et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the feasibility of using RGB imagery from the DJI Mavic Pro for wetland vegetation classification at the species level. It found that multi-feature combinations played an important role in wetland vegetation classification, with the random forest algorithm (RF) utilizing 53 features showing the best performance. The results demonstrate the potential of UAV-based RGB imagery and the OBIA approach for high-precision wetland vegetation classification.

Machine Learning Classification and Accuracy Assessment from High-Resolution Images of Coastal Wetlands

Ricardo Martinez Prentice et al.

Summary: In the study, high-resolution images obtained by multispectral cameras mounted on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles were used to classify coastal wetland sites. The Random Forest classifier outperformed the K-Nearest Neighbors algorithm, especially in pixel-based classification. The findings suggest that for heterogeneous environments like wetlands, pixel-based classification provides a more realistic interpretation of plant community distribution.
