Systemic treatment with alpha-tocopherol and/or sodium selenite decreases the progression of experimental periodontitis

Nurgul Bas et al.

Summary: The study found that the combined application of selenium and alpha-tocopherol can suppress alveolar bone loss in rats with experimental periodontitis. Selenium was shown to reduce inflammation by inhibiting iNOS, and the combination of selenium and alpha-tocopherol has a significant role in preventing periodontitis.

Jiecheng Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a new synthesis scheme for 2-arylfuranocoumarin derivatives was designed, with 2-thiophenylfuranocoumarin (Iy) showing excellent photosensitive activity. The exposure of Aedes aegypti larvae to Iy under ultraviolet light resulted in midgut damage and apoptosis, providing insights into the mode of action of Iy in A. aegypti.

Periodontal inflammation triggers a site-specific and wide radius of calcium metabolic effects on alveolar bone

Ryutaro Kuraji et al.

Summary: The study used Ca-45 as an index to investigate the dynamic changes in calcium metabolism during periodontitis progression in rats. The results showed significant alterations in Ca-45 radioactivity levels in the alveolar bone, reflecting a wide range of site-specific calcium metabolism disruptions induced by periodontitis within the alveolar bone.

Lactoferrin with Zn-ion protects and recovers fibroblast from H2O2-induced oxidative damage

Tetsurou Odatsu et al.

Summary: Lactoferrin (LF) and Zn2+ synergistically enhance antioxidant activities, cell proliferation, and collagen gene expression in human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs), improving wound healing. LF scavenges H2O2, prevents lipid peroxidation, and enhances gene expression related to antioxidant enzymes, reducing apoptosis and promoting cell recovery from oxidative damage induced by H2O2. Addition of ZnCl2 further enhances these effects.

In situ measurements of oxidation-reduction potential and hydrogen peroxide concentration as tools for revealing LPMO inactivation during enzymatic saccharification of cellulose

Adnan Kadic et al.

Summary: Biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to sugars is hindered by high saccharifying enzyme costs. LPMOs offer potential solutions, but overdosing H2O2 can lead to enzyme inactivation. In this study, real-time monitoring of oxidation-reduction potential and H2O2 concentration allowed for predicting LPMO inactivation during enzymatic saccharification, potentially improving overall yields.

Xerostomia aggravates ligation-induced peri-implantitis: A preclinical in vivo study

Yusuke Hori et al.

Summary: The study found that while xerostomia itself did not induce bone resorption around implants, it significantly enhanced bone resorption caused by silk ligatures. Histological analysis and real-time PCR showed that xerostomia induced inflammation and osteoclastogenesis around implants with silk ligatures, as well as altered the microbiota on the plaque around implants. Xerostomia was concluded to accelerate mucosal inflammation and osteoclastogenesis, leading to aggravated bone resorption around implants.

Pyriproxyfen induces intracellular calcium overload and alters antioxidant defenses in Danio rerio testis that may influence ongoing spermatogenesis

Vanessa Staldoni de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The study revealed that pyriproxyfen can affect the ionic balance in the testis of zebrafish through multiple pathways, leading to oxidative stress and impacting reproductive health. Pyriproxyfen may induce toxicity in the testis by causing calcium overload, increased lipid peroxidation, and diminished antioxidant capacity, thereby affecting spermatogenesis.

Design, synthesis, and evaluation of mono-carbonyl analogues of curcumin (MCACs) as potential antioxidants against periodontitis

Ya Zhao et al.

Summary: The study synthesized MCACs with low cytotoxicity and high antioxidant ability, among which 1A showed the most potent cytoprotective effect against H2O2-induced damage. The effects were possibly mediated by reduced MDA and ROS levels through Nrf2 nucleus translocation and HO-1 induction. In rats with experimental periodontitis, 1A significantly reduced bone resorption and decreased TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta levels.

Summary: The 6-week Phase I clinical trial demonstrated that the use of ST266 was effective in reducing gingival inflammation without safety concerns. Different doses of ST266 showed varying degrees of improvement in gingival health at different time points, with overall significant results. Diphenyl diselenide ameliorates diabetic nephropathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats via suppressing oxidative stress and inflammation

Xing Wang et al.

Summary: DPDS supplementation improved hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and renal pathological abnormalities in STZ-induced DN rats. It also promoted antioxidant enzyme activities, reduced pro-inflammatory factors levels, and activated the renal Nrf2/Keap1 signaling pathway while attenuating NF kappa B/MAPK signaling pathways, suggesting DPDS as a potential therapeutic approach for DN.

Pleiotropic consequences of metabolic stress for the major histocompatibility complex class II molecule antigen processing and presentation machinery

Cristina C. Clement et al.

Summary: Hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in individuals with type II diabetes and related mouse models can lead to oxidative alterations in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II antigen processing machinery, affecting endosomal processing efficiency and DM editing activity. These changes in MHC class II antigen presentation may contribute to complications in T2D.
