Agroecology from the ground up: a critical analysis of sustainable soil management in the highlands of Guatemala

Nathan Einbinder et al.

Summary: A persistent problem in agricultural development is the disregard for local processes and cultures when introducing technologies. This article analyzes the agroecological soil management in the Maya-Achi territory of Guatemala, highlighting the importance of incorporating traditional knowledge and practices into sustainable farming systems. While some new practices have been adopted, the high abandonment rates and paternalistic extension methods suggest the need for better collaboration based on existing local knowledge. The findings emphasize the importance of introducing technologies that align with local needs and encourage synergistic learning processes.

Strengthening Agroecology with the Political Pedagogy of Peasant Organisations: A Case Study of Baserritik Mundura in the Basque Country

Beatriz Casado et al.

Summary: La Via Campesina organisations consider education and training as a strategic and priority intervention area for political-pedagogical change. This paper presents the systematisation of the Baserritik Mundura experience, analyzing and sharing the learning derived from this case study and establishing the integral role of the pedagogic proposal as an axis for systematisation. Through a cross-over method, this study presents the learning linked to the pedagogic dimensions, aiming to create a multidimensional educational environment that transforms subjectivities, practices, and beliefs. The learning is presented in eight main areas related to various aspects of the pedagogic proposal. The paper also considers the need for training processes in the official university context and a debate on epistemological and pedagogical perspectives. Despite limitations and challenges, these proposals have great potential to contribute to the construction of a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable agroecological agri-food system based on food sovereignty and the everyday lives of people.

Nahua biocultural richness: an ethnoherpetological perspective

Miriam Itzel Linares-Rosas et al.

Summary: This study documents and analyses the contemporary Nahua knowledge, beliefs, and practices related to herpetofauna in the communities of Aticpac and Xaltepec in central Mexico. The research emphasizes the cultural relevance of snakes and identifies four general classificatory categories for herpetofauna based on local Nahua knowledge. Despite perceptions of danger, beliefs, and actual snake bites, some snakes are still tolerated and even maintained in captivity.
