Summary: Hazardous pesticides have adverse effects on the environment and human health, requiring reevaluation and regulation of their usage. Robust detection and reduction efforts are needed, possibly through a combination of new and conventional methods. Developing fast, sensitive sensing strategies for detecting and removing multiple pesticides is essential.

Summary: This study analyzed the trends and drivers of annual water yield service (WYs) in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China over the past 20 years. The results showed that climate and land-use changes were responsible for the variations in WYs, with afforestation leading to a decrease in WYs compared to nonafforestation areas. Future scenarios of revegetation indicated a potential shrinkage in WYs provision. The study emphasizes the need to carefully assess the impacts of afforestation on both bluewater and green water.

Summary: Conventional agricultural systems pose significant threats to global sustainability, causing social, economic, and environmental problems. Transitioning towards sustainable food systems requires a shift in focus to the interactions throughout the entire value chain. However, traditional marketing approaches have limited consumers to passive roles, leading to disconnection between consumers, producers, and nature.

Summary: Accelerating food systems transformation in the face of global crises requires re-thinking the roles of agricultural research for development (AR4D). In this perspective article, the metaphor of 'swarms' and 'swarming' is used to illustrate a distributed way of working that can help AR4D researchers and institutions step up the pace and scale for food systems transformation. The authors identify four roles for AR4D within swarmed design and highlight the need for collaboration in four priority areas to create an enabling environment for these roles.

Summary: This study explores how to achieve a 20% reduction in pesticide use, while considering local food security and environmental implications, in the densely populated city of Shanghai. The findings suggest that reducing pesticide use has the greatest impact in areas with high pesticide use, potentially reducing pollution in the Yangtze River Estuary and Dianshan Lake. The production of rice and leafy vegetables would be most affected, but using more precise pesticide application technology can mitigate these effects. However, implementing the reduction policy at the district level raises concerns about local food security and reduces environmental benefits. Furthermore, a closed agricultural economy in Shanghai would lead to regional heterogeneity in the outcomes mentioned above.

Summary: The rapid increase in urban population has made cities hot spots for resource demand and processing. Sustainable development requires co-management of resource flows in cities and their connection to agriculture. New technologies and methods can help reduce waste and chemical usage, improving the efficiency of water and nutrient utilization.

Summary: This study developed a spatio-temporal assessment framework to evaluate the impact of food production-driven land use change on water-related ecosystems and services, revealing trade-offs and synergies between food production and ecosystem services provision. To achieve simultaneous development of food production and ecosystem protection, a sustainable agricultural production system must be established with appropriate management measures.

Summary: The main objectives of this research are to characterise the current contexts of food security, its relationship with sustainability, and identify proposals and actions that may support the design of more adjusted policies in the future. The analysis of statistical information from the FAOSTAT database shows that undernutrition is more impacted by the availability of food and nutrients and political stability than by the level of GDP, suggesting that development level is not the primary explanation for nutrition problems. It is suggested to improve agrifood supply chains and support political stability to mitigate undernutrition worldwide and ensure global access to sustainable and healthy diets.

Summary: Determining natural background levels (NBLs) is important for assessing groundwater chemical status, with challenges in understanding the interaction of natural and anthropogenic processes and identifying the boundary between pristine and polluted groundwater. This study presents a roadmap for method selection to establish meaningful NBLs for trace metals in groundwater, comparing three methods for excluding polluted sampling points in Danish aquifers.

Summary: Agroforestry, as a traditional land use system, integrates woody vegetation with crops and/or animal systems to benefit from ecological and economic interactions. It is seen as a key means for achieving sustainable methods of food and fiber production, providing various ecosystem services and environmental benefits. However, research on the contribution of agroforestry to the environment is still limited.
