Machine-Learning-Based Forecasting of Dengue Fever in Brazilian Cities Using Epidemiologic and Meteorological Variables

Kirstin Roster et al.

Summary: This study developed a machine learning model to predict monthly dengue cases in Brazilian cities, with different models performing best in different cities. The random forests model showed the best overall performance. Machine learning and decision tree ensemble models are important for dengue surveillance in Brazil.

Health care provider practices in diagnosis and treatment of malaria in rural communities in Kisumu County, Kenya

Wilfred Ouma Otambo et al.

Summary: This study assessed the accuracy of malaria diagnosis and treatment practices in three healthcare facilities in rural western Kenya. The results showed disparities in malaria diagnosis, with many slide positive cases reported as negatives, and high presumptive treatment of slide negative cases. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) were found to be the most sensitive and specific diagnostic method.

Machine learning reveals the most important psychological and social variables predicting the differential diagnosis of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases

Germano Vera Cruz et al.

Summary: The study suggests that mistreatment during childhood, agreeableness personality trait, and somatic disorder are the main psychological and social predictors of the type of rheumatic disease diagnosed. These predictors are more strongly associated with fibromyalgia than with rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, and Sjogren's syndrome. Overall, adverse childhood experiences seem to be more important than personality traits, psychopathological or demographic variables.

Effect of Amoxicillin Dose and Treatment Duration on the Need for Antibiotic Re-treatment in Children With Community-Acquired Pneumonia The CAP-IT Randomized Clinical Trial

Julia A. Bielicki et al.

Summary: In a clinical trial involving 814 children with community-acquired pneumonia, it was found that lower-dose oral amoxicillin (35-50 mg/kg/day) was noninferior to higher dose (70-90 mg/kg/day), and a 3-day regimen was noninferior to 7 days in terms of the need for antibiotic re-treatment. However, various factors such as disease severity, treatment setting, prior antibiotics received, and acceptability of the noninferiority margin need to be considered when interpreting the findings.

Analyses of Risk, Racial Disparity, and Outcomes Among US Patients With Cancer and COVID-19 Infection

QuanQiu Wang et al.

Summary: This case-control study found that patients with recent cancer diagnosis were at significantly increased risk for COVID-19 infection and its adverse outcomes, with the strongest association for leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and lung cancer. African American cancer patients had a higher risk of COVID-19 infection compared to White patients, highlighting the need for better protection and monitoring strategies.

Multiresistant Bacterial Pathogens Causing Bacterial Pneumonia and Analyses of Potential Risk Factors from Northeast Ethiopia

Tewodros Dessie et al.

Summary: This study revealed a high prevalence of bacterial pneumonia in the study area, with a high rate of bacterial resistance observed in ampicillin, penicillin, and amoxicillin-clavulanate. Repeated prescriptions and use of antimicrobials were significantly independent factors leading to bacterial resistance. Therefore, routine culture with antimicrobial susceptibility testing is crucial in patient management.
