Prospective Clinical Validation of Virtual Patient-Specific Quality Assurance of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy Radiation Therapy Plans

Phillip D. H. Wall et al.

Summary: This study proposes a virtual quality assurance (VQA) system and workflow to evaluate measurement-free patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA). By implementing and validating VQA, the number of required measurements for PSQA can be significantly reduced, leading to more effective allocation of clinical resources.

Circulating Lymphocyte Counts Early During Radiation Therapy Are Associated With Recurrence in Pediatric Medulloblastoma

Clemens Grassberger et al.

Summary: The study found that absolute lymphocyte counts during early radiation therapy are associated with the recurrence risk in pediatric medulloblastoma. Low lymphocyte counts in the early stages of treatment serve as an independent prognostic factor.

Comparison of DNA repair and radiosensitivity of different blood cell populations

Daniel Heylmann et al.

Summary: The research investigated the radiation sensitivity of different human blood cell populations obtained from healthy volunteers. T and B cells were found to be highly sensitive to radiation, but displayed DNA repair competence. In terms of cell death/apoptosis, T cells, NK cells, and B cells showed higher sensitivity compared to monocytes, macrophages, and immature dendritic cells.

Executive Summary of Clinical and Technical Guidelines for Esophageal Cancer Proton Beam Therapy From the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group Thoracic and Gastrointestinal Subcommittees

Michael D. Chuong et al.

Summary: Radiation therapy is essential for the management of esophageal cancer, but can also cause significant harm to critical organs. Proton beam therapy may offer benefits in reducing toxicity and improving long-term survival, but uncertainties persist in treatment planning and delivery.

Randomized Study on Dose Escalation in Definitive Chemoradiation for Patients With Locally Advanced Esophageal Cancer (ARTDECO Study)

Maarten C. C. M. Hulshof et al.

Summary: In definitive chemoradiation for esophageal cancer, escalating radiation dose up to 61.6 Gy to the primary tumor did not significantly improve local tumor control compared to 50.4 Gy. The absence of a dose-effect was observed in both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Radiation-Induced Lymphopenia Risks of Photon Versus Proton Therapy for Esophageal Cancer Patients

Saba Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible differences in radiation-induced lymphocyte depletion for esophageal cancer patients receiving various treatment modalities, including IMRT, PSPT, and IMPT. Prediction models were used to estimate and validate predicted absolute lymphocyte counts, showing that proton plans carried a lower predicted risk of lymphopenia after treatment compared to photon plans. Additionally, IMPT plans outperformed PSPT in terms of predicted lymphocyte preservation.
