Evaluation of the impact of carbonaceous particles in the mechanical performance of lipid Langmuir monolayers

Eduardo Guzman et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the interaction between carbonaceous particles and lipid membranes, and found that particle insertion modified the cohesion and packing of lipid films, resulting in a partial hindrance of their ability to reduce surface tension. Furthermore, particle incorporation worsened the mechanical performance of lipid layers, potentially affecting both their functional and structural roles.

Impact of Asphaltene Stabilizers on the Elasticity of a Crude Oil-Water Interface and Its Correlation to Demulsification under Desalting Conditions

Peter L. Perez et al.

Summary: The use of crude stabilizers is an important chemical tool for refining unstable crude oil blends. Research has found that the ability of crude stabilizers to enhance demulsifier activity is mainly related to reducing interfacial viscosity rather than inhibiting asphaltenes. Interfacial dilatational experiments can capture the synergistic interactions between demulsifiers and certain crude stabilizers, making it a useful tool for selecting the best demulsifier/crude stabilizer combination.

Damping rate measurements and predictions for gravity waves in an air-oil-water system

Girish Kumar Rajan

Summary: The dissipation of standing gravity waves with frequencies within 1-2 Hz is experimentally investigated. The results are compared with established theoretical models, particularly a three-fluid dissipation model and a boundary-layer dissipation model. The empirical findings indicate a linear relationship between the oil-water interfacial elasticity and the thickness of the oil layer. The theoretical predictions are within 5% of the experimental measurements on average, highlighting the potential of the three-fluid model and noting the assumptions made in the analysis and comparisons.

Effect of interfacial rheology on drop coalescence in water-oil emulsion

Talita Coffler Botti et al.

Summary: Several studies have investigated the relationship between the rheological properties of oil-water interfaces and the drainage time of a thin oil film between two aqueous drops. The results show that the properties of the structure formed at the oil-water interface are related to the absence of droplet coalescence. At low surfactant concentrations, the interface is weakly elastic and coalescence always occurs. At higher surfactant concentrations, a solid-like film forms at the interface, preventing further coalescence.

Resonance damping of gravity-capillary waves on water covered with a visco-elastic film of finite thickness: A reappraisal

S. A. Ermakov et al.

Summary: A new approach is developed to address the damping of gravity-capillary waves on water covered with a viscous liquid film, showing that the rotational component of GCW can be formally described as a forced longitudinal or Marangoni wave, with the potential component of GCW acting as an external force. When frequencies and wave numbers of GCW and MW are close, resonance-like excitation of the forced MW is demonstrated. In films thinner than the viscous boundary layers, a single forced MW exists beneath the water surface layer.

Moulding hydrodynamic 2D-crystals upon parametric Faraday waves in shear-functionalized water surfaces

Mikheil Kharbedia et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that dynamically frozen Faraday waves, called 2D hydrodynamic crystals, appear as ordered patterns of nonlinear gravity-capillary modes on water surfaces functionalized with soluble surfactants. The phase coherence and increased surface rigidity lead to the Faraday waves ordering transition, allowing for reversible control of the hydrodynamic crystals' degree of order, unit cell size, and symmetry. These newly discovered hydrodynamic crystals could be utilized in touchless strategies for soft matter and biological scaffolding, enhanced under external control of Faraday waves coherence.

Solutions of a comprehensive dispersion relation for waves at the elastic interface of two viscous fluids

Girish Kumar Rajan

Summary: The paper investigates wave propagation in a system of two arbitrary fluids separated by a contaminated interface, analyzing the effects of four parameters on the solutions of a comprehensive dispersion relation for these waves. Bifurcation is observed at specific parameters in different solutions, with different influences of the parameters on the system behavior. Numerical solutions for waves in a specific system are obtained and classified, with observations of maximum/minimum frequency and damping rate for different wave modes. The relative deviation between numerical and approximate solutions is calculated to show the importance of considering elasticity and capillarity/gravity effects in the analyses.
