Effect of porosity on mechanical and biological properties of bioprinted scaffolds

Mehran Khajehmohammadi et al.

Summary: The treatment of tissue defects is a major challenge due to donor shortage and issues with size, shape, and immunological rejection. This study investigates the effects of porosity percentage and pore shape on the mechanical and biological properties of porous polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds. The results demonstrate that scaffolds with a pore size of around 500 µm and porosity of 50% show the best cell proliferation after 14 days. These 3D bioprinted biodegradable scaffolds have potential applications in hard tissue engineering.

Biomaterials and Extracellular Vesicle Delivery: Current Status, Applications and Challenges

Kasey S. Leung et al.

Summary: This review discusses the current status of extracellular vesicle (EV) delivery through biopolymeric scaffolds for therapeutic applications and the challenges associated with their development. EVs, as cell-derived membranous structures, have therapeutic potential, but proper delivery systems are needed to minimize non-specific and off-target effects. Targeted and site-specific delivery using polymeric scaffolds can address these limitations and has shown improvements in tissue remodeling, wound healing, immunomodulation, and vascular performance. Therefore, EV delivery via biopolymeric scaffolds is becoming a popular approach in tissue engineering.
