A Tailored Lipid Supplement Restored Membrane Fatty Acid Composition and Ameliorates In Vitro Biological Features of Human Amniotic Epithelial Cells

Valeria Pizzuti et al.

Summary: Cell culture conditions can influence the membrane lipid profile of stem cells, and this study found that in vitro culture altered the fatty acid signature of human Amniotic Epithelial Cells (hAECs). Adding a tailored lipid supplement partially restored the membrane fatty acid signature and improved cell morphology, senescence resistance, migratory capacity, and ability to inhibit PBMC proliferation.

Perinatal Stem Cell Therapy to Treat Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Never-Say-Die Story of Differentiation and Immunomodulation

Francesca Paris et al.

Summary: Human term placenta and other postpartum-derived biological tissues can provide perinatal cells with unique stem cell properties for the design of immunotherapy protocols, particularly for the treatment of chronic non-curable human diseases such as type 1 diabetes. This study outlines the advantages of cells derived from amniotic epithelial cells and umbilical cord matrix, and discusses their potential in supporting cell therapy development.

Strategies to capitalize on cell spheroid therapeutic potential for tissue repair and disease modeling

Katherine H. Griffin et al.

Summary: Cell therapies offer a personalized treatment for tissue engineering, but face challenges such as low cell survival rate and insufficient retention at the site. Spheroids, dense cell aggregates, enhance the effects of cell therapies and show promise for mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) by increasing cell survival, retained differentiation, and promotion of tissue regeneration. However, the clinical translation of spheroids has been hindered by formation, instruction, and usage hurdles. This review highlights the state of preclinical spheroid research and discusses strategies for effective translation in therapeutic treatments.

Epidemiology of Type 1 Diabetes

Joel A. Vanderniet et al.

Summary: This article reviews the epidemiology and clinical features of type 1 diabetes (T1D) across the lifespan. While the peak incidence of T1D is still in early adolescence, it is now more commonly diagnosed in adulthood due to increasing recognition of adult-onset T1D. Delaying the onset of T1D and screening for high-risk individuals are emerging interventions. Macro- and microvascular complications are the main causes of morbidity and mortality in adults with T1D.

The ECM: To Scaffold, or Not to Scaffold, That Is the Question

Jonard Corpuz Valdoz et al.

Summary: ECM in tissue engineering plays a crucial role, with scaffold-based and scaffold-free techniques each having their own advantages and limitations. Scaffold-free techniques are suitable for high-throughput cell aggregates preparation, while scaffold-based techniques are more suitable for modeling organotypic models that mimic the native ECM.
