ZIF-8-based micro-arc oxidation composite coatings enhanced the corrosion resistance and superhydrophobicity of a Mg alloy

Shiquan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated a method to grow a zinc-based metal-organic framework (MOF) composite coating directly on the surface of a magnesium alloy using a micro-arc oxidation layer as a transition layer. The results showed that the superhydrophobic composite coating exhibited strong hydrophobicity and self-cleaning properties, which prevented the penetration of water and corrosive ions into the surface of the magnesium alloy, thereby greatly improving its corrosion resistance.

In vitro degradation and multi-antibacterial mechanisms of β-cyclodextrin@curcumin embodied Mg(OH)2/MAO coating on AZ31 magnesium alloy

Kui Xue et al.

Summary: In this research work, a Mg(OH)2 coating was formed on the surface of micro arc oxidation (MAO) coated AZ31 alloy through a low temperature hydrothermal method, incorporating sodium alginate (SA) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD)@curcumin (Cur). The coating exhibited excellent corrosion protection, multi-antibacterial ability and almost no toxicity to the cells. The photothermal performance of the coating was achieved through the light absorption of encapsulated Cur by beta-CD, while SA enhanced the binding force between the drug and the substrate.

In vitro evaluation of degradation, cytocompatibility and antibacterial property of polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite composite coating on bioresorbable magnesium alloy

Zhang Chunyan et al.

Summary: In this study, a polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite (PCL/HA) composite coating was fabricated using a combination of hydrothermal and dipping methods to delay the degradation of magnesium alloy AZ31 as a bioresorbable material. The PCL/HA coating consisted of nano rod-shaped HA crystals and PCL filled in the space of HA crystals. Compared to the single HA coating, the PCL/HA composite coating showed improved binding strength to the Mg alloy and remained adhered to the substrate surface even after 38 days of immersion. The addition of PCL reduced the electrochemical corrosion rate of the HA coated sample by ten times, indicating that the PCL/HA composite coating provided a more effective barrier for the Mg substrate. The cytocompatibility evaluation using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and the antibacterial property evaluation using methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) showed that the PCL/HA composite coating exhibited better BMSC cell compatibility and had potential applications as a biological material. However, further improvement is needed for the antibacterial property of the PCL/HA composite coating in clinical applications.

Summary: Researchers have developed a designed and synthesized fluorescent molecule (OFET) for in vivo mouse brain imaging using three-photon microscopy. The OFET molecule, integrated as water dispersible nanoparticles (OFET NPs), has high fluorescence brightness and maximum emission at 820 nm. Under 1720 nm excitation, OFET NPs exhibit a large three-photon action crosssection, more than twice that of commonly used SR101 dye. With the advantages of long excitation and emission wavelength, and high tissue penetration depth, OFET NPs show good deep-brain imaging performance.

Insight into microbiologically induced corrosion performance of magnesium in tryptic soy broth with S. aureus and E. coli

Tao Liang et al.

Summary: This research systematically explored the microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) performance of magnesium in tryptic soy broth with S. aureus or E. coli. The results showed that magnesium in the biotic solution exhibited higher mass loss, thicker degradation product layer, and more severe pitting corrosion compared to the abiotic solution. Electrochemical measurements indicated that the corrosion rate of magnesium in the biotic solution initially increased due to the decrease in pH caused by the consumption of glucose and the accumulation of acidic metabolites, but subsequently decreased due to the reduction of acidic metabolites, production of alkaline compounds, and corrosion protection provided by the corrosion product and biofilm. Furthermore, the corrosion rate of magnesium was higher in high concentrations of S. aureus and E. coli solution during the initial stage but showed a reverse variation later on. Additionally, magnesium exhibited more severe corrosion in S. aureus solution compared to E. coli solution. These findings suggest that the MIC performance of magnesium is closely related to the concentration and species of bacteria.
