Citizen participation in the governance of nature-based solutions

Bernadett Kiss et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the current forms and implications of citizen participation in the field of sustainability. The study shows that tokenistic forms of participation dominate in nature-based solutions, but deeper forms of engagement can lead to stronger and more diverse social outcomes. The lack of trust among actors involved and inherent institutional structures limit deeper levels of participation, but strengthening the capacities of public institutions can partially bridge these limitations.

What about citizens? A literature review of citizen engagement in sustainability transitions research

Suvi Huttunen et al.

Summary: The research found that there is a lack of understanding of public engagement in sustainable transitions, with forms of citizen engagement including envisioning sustainable futures and local transition implementation. While these forms can facilitate transitions and empower participants, citizen involvement throughout the research process is limited and the recognition of citizens' local knowledge is also restricted.
