Coupling coordination analysis of ecosystem services and urban development of resource-based cities: A case study of Tangshan city

Shichao Zhu et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has had significant impacts on the ecological environment. This study aims to evaluate the coupling coordination degree between urban development systems and ecosystems, based on ecosystem service value. The results show that while the level of coupling coordination between urban development and ecosystems in Tangshan City is gradually improving, most areas have shifted from lagging urban development to lagging ecosystems, leading to an increasing contradiction between the two systems. Water supply, environment purification, and hydrological regulation are identified as the main factors influencing the coordinated development between urban development and ecosystems. These findings highlight the need for policymakers to continually monitor ecosystem service changes and formulate appropriate regulatory policies to ensure the provision of ecosystem services.

Ecosystem Service Valuation along Landscape Transformation in Central Ethiopia

Abera Assefa Biratu et al.

Summary: This study estimated the values of ecosystem services (ES) based on past and future land use and land cover (LULC) changes in central Ethiopia. The results showed a continuous decline in forest, wetland, and grazing land areas over the past few decades, with a projected continuation of this decline in the future. Meanwhile, cultivated land and built-up areas are expected to increase. Overall, the value of ecosystem services shows a downward trend.

Assessing the impacts of land use/cover changes on ecosystem service values in Rib watershed, Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia

Melkamu Alebachew Anley et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of land use/land cover changes on ecosystem service values in the Rib watershed of the Upper Blue Nile Basin between 2000 and 2020. The results indicate a decrease in forest, shrubland, and grassland, as well as an increase in cultivated land, settlement, and waterbody. The total ecosystem service values have also decreased, suggesting the impact of land use/land cover changes on ecological degradation. Therefore, it is recommended to consider both land use/land cover changes and ecosystem service values in land management decision-making processes.
