Modelling the Public Perception of Urban Public Space Lighting Based on SDGSAT-1 Glimmer Imagery: A Case Study in Beijing, China

Zirong Lin et al.

Summary: Public space lighting is crucial for public perception, human health, and urban planning. This study combines SDGSAT-1 imagery, ground-measured data, and public perception data to assess the feasibility of using satellite images to simulate public perception. The results show that public perception is influenced by factors such as panoramic illuminance, uniformity, and blue light. The study also highlights the strong correlation between SDGSAT-1 images and panoramic illuminance, demonstrating the potential of remote sensing for evaluating public perception on a larger scale.

Infrastructure inequality is a characteristic of urbanization

Bhartendu Pandey et al.

Summary: This paper examines inequalities in infrastructure distribution in the context of urbanization, focusing on India and South Africa. The study finds that South Africa exhibits greater infrastructure inequalities compared to India, and urban inequalities are more prevalent than rural inequalities. Moreover, the analysis shows that urban inequalities in infrastructure provisioning and availability increase as the spatial scale expands. Findings also indicate that India experiences greater concentration of inequalities at coarse spatial scales. Additionally, the paper reveals the correlation between urban infrastructure inequalities and urbanization levels in terms of demographics, economy, and infrastructure development.

Using radiant intensity to characterize the anisotropy of satellite-derived city light at night

Xi Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals the anisotropy characteristics of artificial lights at night (ALAN) and the relationship between radiant intensity and viewing zenith angle (VZA) through statistical analysis. The findings show the existence of a "cold spot" effect in high building areas, where radiance reaches a local minimum at a specific VZA. The authors also construct indexes related to urban morphology that correlate with the anisotropic pattern of ALAN.

Research on Road Extraction Method Based on Sustainable Development Goals Satellite-1 Nighttime Light Data

Dingkun Chang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new road extraction method, BO-MWSA, using high-resolution nighttime light (NTL) data acquired by the SDGSAT-1 satellite. The results show that BO-MWSA outperforms SVM and OT algorithms in extracting roads, making it an effective method for road extraction using NTL imagery.

Analysis of the Urban Land Use Efficiency in the New-Type Urbanization Process of China's Yangtze River Economic Belt

Liu Yang et al.

Summary: The accelerated urbanization process in China has caused a shift in the urban land use structure. The issuance of 'the National New-type Urbanization Plan' by the Chinese government, which focuses on the rational use of resources, is of great significance for the intensification and sustainability of land use. This study empirically shows that the new-type urbanization has a significant positive impact on urban land use efficiency.

Monitoring Land-Use Efficiency in China's Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2000 to 2018

Yunchen Wang et al.

Summary: This study monitors the spatiotemporal indicator SDG 11.3.1 in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) and its three major urban agglomerations, and explores the relationship between land consumption rate (LCR) and population growth rate (PGR). The findings show that the LCR and PGR relationship is relatively stable, providing important information support for promoting sustainable and coordinated development between LCR and PGR.

Does China's City-Size Distribution Present a Flat Distribution Trend? A Socioeconomic and Spatial Size Analysis From DMSP-OLS Nighttime Light Data

Kaifang Shi et al.

Summary: This article evaluates China's city-size distribution based on nighttime light data, finding a flat distribution trend from 1995 to 2015. The trend in SC is more apparent than that in SS, and borrowed size is a significant factor contributing to this trend. Factors such as residential suburbanization, transportation cost reductions, local government policies, and land finances effectively explain the differences in trends between SS and SC.

Assessment of urban resilience based on the transformation of resourcebased cities: a case study of Panzhihua, China

Yue Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that during the urban transformation in Panzhihua, the urban resilience experienced three stages, with major changes in infrastructure and environment, economic and social sectors, while minimal changes were observed in health and well-being, and government management capabilities. Transportation and communication, social security, education development, and comprehensive development ability were found to be closely linked to urban resilience.

Population, light, and the size distribution of cities

Christian Dueben et al.

Summary: By analyzing data from over 10,000 cities, we found variations in city population and economic distribution among different countries. While many countries' city size distributions conform to Zipf's law, deviations are largely due to an undue concentration in the largest cities. Historical factors play a significant role in shaping city size distribution.
