Responses of flood peaks to land use and landscape patterns under extreme rainstorms in small catchments - A case study of the rainstorm of Typhoon Lekima in Shandong, China

Yuanhao Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of flood peaks to land use landscape patterns in small catchments. The results showed correlations between flood peak modulus and landscape indices, as well as the sensitivity of small catchments to floods. The findings provide support for disaster prevention and land use planning.

Quantifying the impacts of land cover change on catchment-scale urban flooding by classifying aerial images

Jiada Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impacts of impervious land cover on urban drainage systems using object-based image classification. The results show that urban redevelopment leads to increased impervious areas, resulting in higher flooding peaks and volumes. The study also suggests using remote sensing image classification to assess flooding risks in human-altered landscapes.

Assessment of the Usability of SAR and Optical Satellite Data for Monitoring Spatio-Temporal Changes in Surface Water: Bodrog River Case Study

L'ubomir Ksenak et al.

Summary: Mapping watercourses and their surroundings through remote sensing methods is an effective way to capture change and predict hazards. This paper explores the use of SAR technology and optical multispectral images for long-term observations of river behavior and mapping changes in watercourses. The results show that SAR extraction using VV polarisation configuration and a Lee filter for noise filtering is accurate, and the comparison with spectral indices and supervised classification further validates the method. The overall accuracy achieved is high, with maximum values of 98.6% for OA.

Land Cover Changes in Selected Areas Next to Lagoons Located on the Southern Coast of the Baltic Sea, 1984-2021

Dariusz Gozdowski et al.

Summary: This study evaluates land cover changes in selected areas near three lagoons located on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. The analysis focuses on forest areas and inland water reservoirs using multispectral satellite images. From 1984 to 2021, positive changes in land cover are observed, with an increase in forest area and no significant change in the area of water reservoirs.

Flood monitoring by integration of Remote Sensing technique and Multi-Criteria Decision Making method

Hadi Farhadi et al.

Summary: Traditional flood monitoring methods are time-consuming and costly, while remote sensing technology is considered the best solution due to its synoptic view and cost-effectiveness. This study applied the ELECTRE technique to select the optimal bands of Sentinel-2 satellite images for flood detection and used the SVM classification method to classify water bodies before and after flooding. The results showed that the optimal bands classification model achieved higher accuracy levels in a short period of time.

SOL40: Forty Years of Simulations under Climate and Land Use Change

Alessandro Ceppi et al.

Summary: Land-use change caused by urban development has become a major concern, as it alters the response of catchments to meteorological events. Urban basins have lower storage capacity and faster runoff, leading to faster rise and higher peak discharge rates in urban rivers during storms compared to rural catchments. This study, named SOL40, conducted a reanalysis of 40 years of simulations to assess the impact of anthropogenic development on urban catchment-scale hydrology. By comparing current land-use-based Curve Number (CN) maps with past land-use-based CN maps, the study aimed to quantify and separate the effects of land-use change from those of climate change.

A Field-Data-Aided Comparison of Three 10 m Land Cover Products in Southeast Asia

Yaxin Ding et al.

Summary: Comparing three 10 m resolution global land cover products (FROM-GLC10, ESRI2020, and ESA2020) in terms of accuracy is crucial for studying global and regional environment protection, sustainable development, and optimizing mapping methods. However, previous validations have lacked field collection points in large regions like Southeast Asia, posing challenges in land cover mapping.

Impact of landscape pattern change on water-related ecosystem services: Comprehensive analysis based on heterogeneity perspective

Junhan Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the impact of landscape heterogeneity on water-related ecosystem services by exploring the relative importance of landscape structure composition and spatial configuration changes. The results showed that landscape pattern changes significantly affected water production, soil conservation, nitrogen export, and phosphorus export, with noticeable interannual and spatial differences.

Flood Mapping Proposal in Small Watersheds: A Case Study of the Rebollos and Miranda Ephemeral Streams (Cartagena, Spain)

Valentina Betancourt-Suarez et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic landscape changes near the Spanish Mediterranean coast have caused significant disturbances to fluvial system dynamics, including the addition of external water resources from the Tajo River, rising water tables due to irrigation, and the development of urban tourism and industrial estates. Remote sensing techniques were used to diagnose official flood hazard maps, identifying areas flooded during recent events and the potential effects of anthropogenic actions on flooding dynamics.

A new urban hydrological model considering various land covers for flood simulation

Chen Hu et al.

Summary: This study developed a new urban hydrological model, TVGM_Urban model, which showed advantages in total runoff and peak flow in Shenzhen city application, considering different land covers and both saturation excess and infiltration excess runoff generation. The uncertainty analysis indicated better performance of the TVGM_Urban model in reducing structural uncertainty and prediction uncertainty.

Patterns of land system change in a Southeast Asian biodiversity hotspot

Marc Schmid et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Tanintharyi Region in Myanmar experienced vegetation cover degradation, intensification of agricultural use, and transformation towards smallholders' cultivation systems and commercial crop plantations between 2002 and 2016. Although intact forest was still prevalent in the region in 2016, significant portions had suffered degradation, leading to concerns of potential displacement effects and environmental impacts. Sustainable development in this biodiversity hotspot necessitates careful land use planning to support both nature conservation and smallholder welfare.
