Hybrid order picking: A simulation model of a joint manual and autonomous order picking system

Sven Winkelhaus et al.

Summary: Order picking is a critical process that affects business success in various industries. While manual operations are still common, there are also technologies available to automate or support order picking. This study examines hybrid order picking, where autonomous robots and human pickers work together, and evaluates its performance using a simulation model. The results show that hybrid order picking can improve throughput and reduce costs compared to pure manual or automated order picking. Future research potentials are discussed based on the simulation results.

Order batching and batch sequencing in an AMR-assisted picker-to-parts system

Ivan Zulj et al.

Summary: The study focuses on an AMR-assisted picker-to-parts system in warehouses, aiming to minimize the total tardiness of customer orders by partitioning the warehouse into zones, using AMRs to support order pickers, and optimizing the travel and walking speed ratios between AMRs and order pickers. Increasing the speed ratio is found to be more effective in reducing total tardiness compared to increasing the AMR fleet size.

Picker Routing in AGV-Assisted Order Picking Systems

Maximilian Loffler et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the routing algorithms for AGV-assisted order picking in parallel-aisle warehouses. It proposes a dynamic programming routine with polynomial runtime for fixed picking order sequences and offers a heuristic for cases where order sequencing is a decision. The use of AGVs has shown to significantly improve order-fulfillment processes in warehouses.

Assignment of duplicate storage locations in distribution centres to minimise walking distance in order picking

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of e-commerce, B2C warehouses are facing the challenge of processing heterogeneous and small volume orders. Traditional storage strategies are no longer advantageous, leading to the exploration of scattered storage strategies. A new scattered storage strategy considering product correlation, formulated as a 0-1 integer programming model, was proposed in this study. GA and basic PSO algorithms were developed for large-scale problem solving, with a specially designed new PSO algorithm and a hybrid algorithm showing improved solution quality.

Planning and control of autonomous mobile robots for intralogistics: Literature review and research agenda

Giuseppe Fragapane et al.

Summary: Autonomous mobile robots are being introduced in various intralogistics operations, allowing for decentralized decision-making processes and dynamic reactions to system and environmental changes. This study categorizes research related to the planning and control of AMRs, providing a framework for decision-making guidance to managers. The advancements in AMR technology have a significant impact on planning and control decisions, leading to a need for further research in this field.

A Tabu Search algorithm for the Probabilistic Orienteering Problem

Xiaochen Chou et al.

Summary: The Orienteering Problem involves selecting a subset of customers to visit within a time budget to maximize revenue. The Probabilistic Orienteering Problem introduces randomness by considering customer visits based on probabilities, making it more challenging. Tabu Search, a method for escaping local optima, is utilized in this study to solve the problem using a Monte Carlo evaluator.
