The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Drug Use Behaviors, Fentanyl Exposure, and Harm Reduction Service Support among People Who Use Drugs in Rural Settings

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the opioid overdose crisis in the US, particularly in rural areas. Our study found that drug availability changed, overdose risk increased, and other drug-related harms were faced by people who use drugs in rural areas during the pandemic. It is important to ensure access to harm reduction services, including overdose prevention and drug checking for this vulnerable population.

Legality of drug checking equipment in the United States: A systematic legal analysis

Summary: Fentanyl and its analogs are increasingly prevalent in the illicit drug supply in the US, and drug checking equipment can potentially reduce overdose-related harm. However, the legality of possessing and distributing drug checking equipment varies greatly among states. Clarifying or modifying related laws may improve access to these devices and help reduce overdose deaths.

Harm reduction and health services provided by syringe services programs in 2019 and subsequent impact of COVID-19 on services in 2020

Summary: This study describes the harm reduction and health services provided by U.S syringe services programs (SSPs) in 2019 and the changes in those services in 2020. The results show that most SSPs increased telehealth provision of mental health and primary care services in 2020. They also expanded harm reduction services and the provision of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). However, there was a decrease in on-site HIV and HCV testing.

North Carolina community pharmacists' buprenorphine dispensing practices and attitudes

Summary: This study assesses the stocking behaviors, policy awareness, perceptions, and attitudes of pharmacists in North Carolina regarding buprenorphine. The findings indicate that despite the availability of buprenorphine in most pharmacies, pharmacist refusal to dispense and perceived ordering limits may hinder patient access. These factors are associated with pharmacist attitudes and the type of pharmacy.

Pharmacist attitudes and provision of harm reduction services in North Carolina: an exploratory study

Summary: This study examined North Carolina pharmacists' experiences with and attitudes about harm reduction services, finding that urban pharmacists dispensed naloxone more frequently than rural pharmacists, and there were slight differences in attitudes towards providing harm reduction services to people who inject drugs. However, pharmacy store policies and personal beliefs posed barriers to the dispensing of non-prescription syringes and naloxone.
