Measurement of Three-Dimensional Internal Dynamic Strains in the Intervertebral Disc of the Lumbar Spine With Mechanical Loading and Golden-Angle Radial Sparse Parallel-Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Rajiv G. Menon et al.

Summary: This study developed and demonstrated a noninvasive technique to quantify 3D internal dynamic strains in the spine intervertebral disc. By utilizing static mechanical loading and MRI imaging, the compressive strain experienced by different IVD segments was successfully measured. The repeatability tests showed a strong correlation in the results, indicating the reliability of this technique.

In vivo relationships between lumbar facet joint and intervertebral disc composition and diurnal deformation

B. Alexander Oldweiler et al.

Summary: The discs and facet joints are found to have an interdependent relationship in terms of health, but are not mechanically linked. Factors such as spinal curvature may determine in vivo spine mechanics. Further research in symptomatic or aged populations is needed to confirm these findings.
