How I Got Here and Where I'm Going Next

Summary: My career can be divided into two distinct periods, the first two decades were filled with insecurity, but I was fortunate enough to stumble upon situations that ultimately contributed to my growth as a linguist and teacher. By 1988, I had gained control over my insecurities after publishing a well-received coauthored book on language contact and becoming the editor of Language. Since then, most of my research has focused on language contact, but my initial encounter with Selis-Ql'ispe (also known as Montana Salish) in 1981 sparked a 40-year dedication to understanding the language and its history.
