Beyond the In-Person Interview? How Interview Quality Varies Across In-person, Telephone, and Skype Interviews

David R. Johnson et al.

Summary: The study analyzed over 300 interviews conducted using three modes: in-person, telephone, and Skype. It found that in-person interviews have clear advantages in producing conversation turns and word-dense transcripts, but do not significantly differ from remote interviews in terms of interview length, subjective ratings, and substantive coding. Overall, remote interviews may be necessary or advantageous in some situations, but they often result in less rich information compared to in-person interviews.
