Climate change and its effect on groundwater quality

Maurizio Barbieri et al.

Summary: Understanding and researching water quality changes at larger scales and their connections to land use and climate change is crucial for future protection and restoration investments. The link between climate change and groundwater quality requires further investigation, and long-term monitoring and quantification of baseline properties are necessary. This study examines regional carbonate aquifers in Central Italy to explore the impact of climate change on groundwater quality, highlighting the need for strategic groundwater management policies and planning.

Integrated seawater intrusion and groundwater quality assessment of a coastal aquifer: GALDIT, geospatial and analytical approaches

Temitope Ezekiel Idowu et al.

Summary: The pressure and dependence on coastal aquifers are increasing globally, leading to overexploitation, groundwater pollution, and seawater intrusion. Integrated analyses provide insights into aquifer vulnerability and quality. This study characterizes the Mombasa North coast's aquifer using multiple approaches and geospatial analysis. It finds that the aquifer has varying vulnerabilities to seawater intrusion, predominantly Na-Cl water type, and different levels of total hardness. The study suggests the creation of a geodatabase as a template for future water quality monitoring and emphasizes the need for temporal studies.

Health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in Maros karst groundwater: a Monte Carlo simulation approach

Anwar Mallongi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution of potentially toxic elements in groundwater in the Maros karst area. Multiple indexing methods were used to evaluate the groundwater quality, and the levels of toxic elements were calculated to assess the cancer risks to the residents. The results showed that certain toxic elements exceeded the permissible limit and both seasonal and spatial variations were observed. Monte Carlo simulation revealed the potential cancer risks to children and adults due to exposure to these toxic elements.

GIS and RS intelligence in delineating the groundwater potential zones in Arid Regions: a case study of southern Aseer, southwestern Saudi Arabia

Mohd Yawar Ali Khan et al.

Summary: This study utilizes an integrated multi-criteria analysis and geospatial tools to identify groundwater potential zones in the Aseer province, Saudi Arabia. The results show that 57% of the area has moderate to very high potential, attributed to factors such as Wadi deposits, low topography, good water quality, and porosity and permeability. The remaining 43% of the area has negligible potential. The findings highlight the importance of such integrated analysis in assessing and managing groundwater potential.

Naghmeh Jafarzadeh et al.

Summary: Groundwater aquifers are a significant source of drinking water, but potential contamination by heavy metals like Chromium, Cadmium, and Lead poses health risks that require further research. While concentrations were found within acceptable limits, sensitivity analysis revealed the need for continued monitoring, especially among different age groups of consumers.

Summary: This study estimated the health risks of exposure to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in river water, sediments, and edible aquatic biota in coastal areas. The findings suggest that adverse health impacts may occur in the Pangkep coastal population. The sensitivity analysis identified the factors that have the greatest influence on health risks.

Probabilistic multi-pathway human health risk assessment due to heavy metal(loid)s in a traditional gold mining area in Ecuador

Samantha Jimenez-Oyola et al.

Summary: The study conducted a Bayesian probabilistic human health risk assessment related to multi-pathway exposure to heavy metal(loid)s in a gold mining area in Southern Ecuador. The results showed unacceptable risk levels for human health in both adults and children, primarily through ingestion of tap water and incidental ingestion of surface water. However, exposure to soil via accidental ingestion and dermal contact was below the safety limit, posing no risk to human health.

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: The comprehensive investigation of PAHs in surface water and sediment samples of the Damodar River Basin revealed the presence of 3-ring and 4-ring PAHs, primarily originating from anthropogenic activities such as petrogenic and fuel combustion. The contamination in surface water was attributed to petrogenic and fuel combustion sources while sediments showed contribution from coal burning, fuel combustion, petrogenic, and pyrolysis. The concentrations of PAHs indicated potential health and ecological risks associated with improper management practices in the area.
