Longitudinal Effects of the Acting White Accusation and Racial Identity Development Among Black College Students

Myles Durkee et al.

Summary: The research findings suggest that acting White accusation (AWA) has an impact on the racial identity of Black youths, especially during the transition to college. Gender plays a moderating role in this impact, with AWA experiences leading to lower racial identity centrality for Black males, creating a negative feedback loop.

Internalized Racism and Gendered Colorism Among African Americans: a Study of Intragroup Bias, Perceived Discrimination, and Psychological Well-being

Trinity Alexander et al.

Summary: This research examines the distinct ways in which colorism affects African American men and women. The study finds that both genders exhibit a preference for lighter and medium skin tones over dark skin tones. As internalized racism increases, both men and women experience lower skin color satisfaction, exhibit more colorist behaviors and beliefs, and experience greater psychological distress. Additionally, as skin tone becomes darker, women experience increased perceived discrimination, psychological distress, and internalized racism, whereas this relationship is not observed in men. Finally, darker skin tone is associated with increased dissonant skin tone preferences in men.

Crossing the racial line: The fluidity vs. fixedness of racial identity

Payton A. Small et al.

Summary: The five studies explored how individuals' identity claims that go against societal norms on group membership are perceived. The results showed that mismatches between claimed race/ethnicity and parental background can lead to dislike, delegitimization, and denial from perceivers, especially when it comes to racial/ethnic identities. The studies also revealed that racial essentialism plays a role in the disparagement of individuals with mismatched racial identities.
