'There is a lot of good in knowing, but there is also a lot of downs': public views on ethical considerations in population genomic screening

Amelia K. Smit et al.

Summary: Publics play a crucial role in population genomic screening, and their perspectives on ethical considerations are vital for programme design and policy making. Through semi-structured interviews with 30 participants who had received information on their personal genomic risk of melanoma, this study identified four key themes related to ethical considerations: personal responsibility for health, perceptions of genetic fatalism, implications for parenting and reproduction, and divided views on choosing to receive genomic risk information. The findings suggest a need for further public engagement to deepen the complexity of debate and consider the appropriate implementation of population genomic testing.
