Test-Wiseness and Multiple-Choice Accounting Questions: Implications for Instructors

Charles D. Bailey et al.

Summary: This study explores the test-wiseness rules that accounting students may use when facing multiple-choice questions they cannot answer. The effectiveness of these rules, which heavily rely on flaws in question design, is not well understood. An experiment involving graduate research assistants shows that participants successfully utilize three rules to answer questions on unfamiliar material and can evaluate the usefulness of the rules. A survey of undergraduate accounting majors at two universities reveals that they have a good understanding of the relative usefulness of these rules, with strong correlation between universities.
