The case against the criminalization of doping

Jay Michael Cordero

Summary: This article discusses the justification for criminalizing doping use in sports, arguing that the proposed arguments from fraud, health risk, and protection of sports integrity do not provide sufficient reason for criminalization. It is concluded that a criminal response to doping is disproportionate, unnecessary, and impractical.

A systematic review of research into coach perspectives and behaviours regarding doping and anti-doping

Luke T. Barnes et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed coach anti-doping literature over the past 20 years, revealing a development and diversification of research in this area. The focus has shifted from quantitative studies on coaches' knowledge and beliefs to qualitative studies examining behavioral and contextual factors. However, further high-quality research is needed to fully understand the complexity of doping in sport and guide future policy and practice.

Agents in the sporting field: a law and economics perspective

William Bull et al.

Summary: Sports agents have become more prominent in recent times, playing a crucial role in representing athletes, advising sports clubs, and facilitating employment contracts and transfer deals. Their economic role sets them apart from players and clubs, leading to a regulatory conundrum particularly apparent in the field of football. This raises questions about the need to regulate the profession of sports agents and what type of regulation is necessary from a law and economics perspective.

Theorizing the form and impact of sport scandals

Ulrik Wagner et al.

Summary: This paper aims to propose a theoretical model to help us understand the form of sport scandals, and to construct two typical sport scandals to discuss their impact on society. By combining insights from Luhmann and ideal types from Weber, scandals are described as paradoxical forms where excluded meaning re-enters to create spaces of temporary liminality.

The challenges of anti-doping education implementation in Kenya: Perspectives from athletes and anti-doping educators

Byron O. Juma et al.

Summary: Kenyan athletes are at a high risk of doping due to poor knowledge of antidoping. Efforts to deliver antidoping education have improved but neglect sub-elite athletes, leading to overreliance on informal sources and potential athlete exploitation. Leveraging coaches to promote education delivery may be necessary in developing countries.

Racing Clean in a Tainted World: A Qualitative Exploration of the Experiences and Views of Clean British Elite Distance Runners on Doping and Anti-Doping

Jake Shelley et al.

Summary: The study found that athletes compete in sports mainly for personal satisfaction and to showcase their abilities, rather than being tempted by prohibited substances or methods. The implementation of anti-doping measures is uneven globally, and doping issues stem from specific sporting cultures, negatively impacting the careers of clean athletes.

Summary: This study explored the meaning and importance of 'clean sport' and 'clean athlete identity' through collaboration with elite athletes and NADOs. The results showed that clean athlete identity is rooted in upbringing, early experiences, and love of sport, characterized by intrinsic commitment to fundamental values and morals acquired in childhood. In contrast, the concept of clean performance-enhancement is highly idiosyncratic and flexible.

The toxic doxa of clean sport and IOC's and WADA's quest for credibility

Fabien Ohl et al.

Summary: This paper argues that the damaged credibility of WADA and the IOC is not only due to their failure to prevent doping in Russia, but mainly because of their promises of clean sport and the competition and contradictions in controlling the doping beliefs. The Russian crisis disrupted the performances of the IOC and WADA, revealing their individual agendas and rivalry over controlling the doping beliefs, with the IOC seeking to protect its power while WADA tries to maintain trust.

Fight Against Doping as a Social Performance: The Case of the 2015-2016 Russian Anti-Doping Crisis

Fabien Ohl et al.

Summary: This article examines the Russian doping case and argues that the social performance of the IOC and WADA was ineffective due to several reasons. The crisis revealed a gap between anti-doping promises and the reality of widespread doping in Russia, weakened the binding role of sport doxa, and hindered cooperation among anti-doping stakeholders to establish a shared meaning of the situation. The study highlights the importance of the diachronic dimension of social performance, Bourdieu's field theory, Abbott's perspective on the lack of control over meanings, and the relative autonomy of meanings associated with social performance.
