One-Year Readmission Following Undifferentiated Acute Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure

Summary: This study examined the readmission and mortality rates of patients with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure and found that a history of previous hospital admissions was associated with higher risk of readmission and death. Although patients requiring ventilatory support were more likely to be readmitted, there was no significant association between ventilatory support and one-year readmission or mortality probabilities.

Efficacy of domiciliary noninvasive ventilation on clinical outcomes in posthospital chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that domiciliary NIV significantly decreased exacerbation frequency in posthospital COPD patients, but did not improve mortality or gas exchange. Further studies are needed to evaluate the benefits of domiciliary NIV on COPD patients.

Defining successful non-invasive ventilation initiation: Data from a real-life cohort

Summary: The study found that achieving all five goals in home non-invasive ventilation initiation is rare, with successful initiation being infrequent. A tidal volume of >= 7.8 ml/kg of ideal body weight was associated with a higher likelihood of successful NIV initiation. However, improvement in daytime partial arterial carbon dioxide pressure was not necessarily correlated with improvements in health-related quality of life or sleep quality.
