Rice-Husk Shredding as a Means of Increasing the Long-Term Mechanical Properties of Earthen Mixtures for 3D Printing

Elena Ferretti et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the use of a particular type of biocomposite, namely rice-husk-lime biocomposite, as a stabilizer for 3D printed earthen mixtures in building construction. The research aims to enhance the long-term mechanical properties of the hardened product by investigating the effect of shredded vegetable fiber on the material. The study compares uniaxial compression test results of cubic specimens made with shredded and unaltered vegetable fiber for different curing periods, and finds that the hardened earthen mixture exhibits peculiar behaviors that defy the characteristics of brittle materials. The study also highlights the natural vulcanization process that occurs over time due to the mineralization of the vegetable fiber by the carbonation of the lime.

Yield stress measurement for earth-based building materials: the weighted plunger test

Julia Tourtelot et al.

Summary: This study developed a field-oriented test for yield stress of earth-based building materials accurate enough to identify small variations for demanding applications. Additionally, a weighted plunger test was used to measure yield stress as accurately as the squeeze test, aiding in the implementation of new building techniques.

Effects of organic admixtures on the fresh and mechanical properties of earth-based plasters

Meryl Lagouin et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of clay content and organic admixtures in influencing the performance of plaster. While some additives can improve water content and mechanical properties, only flax fiber-based mortars demonstrate strong adhesion and prevent cracking during drying.

Robotic tools, native matter: workflow and methods for geomaterial reconstitution using additive manufacturing

K. L. Bar-Sinai et al.

Summary: This paper discusses recent advancements in on-site robotic construction, which can directly transform soil into architecture. It presents a workflow and methods for additive manufacturing using desert soil and robotic tools, exploring three different methods and their comparative analysis through experiments. The results indicate the potential of combining computational design, robotic fabrication, and manual assembly for resource-conscious and site-tailored additive manufacturing in architecture.
