The Ineffability of Induction

David Builes

Summary: The author's first goal is to propose a distinctively metaphysical approach to solve the problem of induction. They argue that orthodox Humean and non-Humean views can only justify induction by appealing to extremely strong and unmotivated probabilistic biases. The second goal is to outline what such a metaphysical approach could look like, and they illustrate this through a toy case that demonstrates how metaphysics can aid in making progress on the problem of induction.

Grounding theories of powers

Matthew Tugby

Summary: This paper discusses different forms of necessitarianism and argues that necessitarians need to develop new approaches. The author proposes using the concepts of grounding and essential dependence to explore necessary connections in nature, and introduces new positions and viewpoints based on different combinations of these concepts. The overall aim is to provide a new metaphysical framework for understanding theories of powers and launch a new necessitarian research programme.

The World Just Is the Way It Is

David Builes

Summary: The relationship between objects and properties is viewed in two ways: primitive individuals instantiating properties and objects being bundles of properties. This paper aims to formulate a view that addresses the problems of both perspectives. Ultimately, the view proposed here leads to a radical version of Monism that eliminates the distinction between objects and properties.

Reconsidering the Dispositional Essentialist Canon

Samuel Kimpton-Nye

Summary: This paper discusses Dispositional Essentialism as a unified anti-Humean account of low-level physical properties and laws of nature. It introduces the Canonical Dispositional Essentialism (CDE) and an alternative anti-Humean account of properties and laws. The author argues that viewing properties as qualitative grounds of dispositions and laws as features of possible property distributions can better explain various scenarios, overcoming an explanatory shortfall of CDE and achieving continuity with science.

Induction and the Glue of the World

Harjit Bhogal

Summary: Humean metaphysical views have often been criticized for leading to inductive skepticism, as their position naturally brings about skepticism about important inductive inferences. This poses a major problem, perhaps a fatal one, for the Humean, while the anti-Humean does not face the same issue.

Skepticism and the principle of sufficient reason

Robert C. Koons et al.

Summary: This article justifies the Principle of Sufficient Reason dialectically by demonstrating the disastrous consequences of denying it, proposing a version restricted to basic natural facts, and discussing extreme empirical skepticism as a result of its denial. It evaluates six current theories of empirical knowledge and objections based on Neo-Humeanism and the essentiality of origins, while also exploring the possibility of having empirical knowledge without awareness.

Breaking the explanatory circle

Michael Townsen Hicks

Summary: This article argues that criticisms against Humeans are often based on misunderstandings of causal explanation, and proposes two plausible commitments independent of Humeanism to address these criticisms.
