The Negative Effect of Social Discrimination on Pain Tolerance and the Moderating Role of Pain Catastrophizing

Elizabeth J. Richardson et al.

Summary: This study examined the negative impact of social discrimination on pain tolerance during experimentally induced cold pressor pain. The results showed that higher levels of discrimination were associated with catastrophic thinking about pain, and there was a significant negative relationship between experienced discrimination and pain tolerance. Pain catastrophizing played a significant moderating role, as it eliminated the association between social discrimination and pain tolerance when catastrophizing levels were high. Racial minority status did not significantly alter this moderating relationship.

Summary: Native Americans (NAs) have higher rates of chronic pain, possibly due to their increased exposure to adverse life events and psychological distress. Psychological distress, pain-related anxiety, and catastrophizing may contribute to the heightened risk of chronic pain in NAs.

A Systematic Review of the Prospective Relationship between Child Maltreatment and Chronic Pain

Teresa J. Marin et al.

Summary: This systematic review assessed the association between childhood maltreatment and chronic pain, finding low to very low quality evidence and potential moderators. Higher quality studies suggest no direct association between maltreatment and pain, with PTSD potentially serving as a mediator or moderator. High quality studies are needed to further advance understanding of this relationship.

Rethinking Concepts and Categories for Understanding the Neurodevelopmental Effects of Childhood Adversity

Karen E. Smith et al.

Summary: Understanding the processes through which early adverse experiences affect children's nervous-system development, health, and behavior is crucial for developing effective interventions. However, current conceptualizations are limited, and alternative formulations are needed to advance knowledge about the neurobiological mechanisms through which adversity influences human development.
