Financial inclusion and food insecurity: Examining linkages and potential pathways

Mobile money and entrepreneurship in East Africa: the mediating roles of digital savings and access to digital credit

Summary: This study examines the link between mobile money (MoMo) and entrepreneurship in East Africa, and explores the roles of digital savings and access to digital credit in this link. The findings suggest that MoMo adoption increases the likelihood of engaging in entrepreneurship, especially among women, rural residents, and the youth. Digital savings and access to digital credit serve as important channels through which FinTech adoption influences entrepreneurship. These findings have implications for employment, poverty reduction, and sustainable development.

The role of financial literacy in households' asset accumulation process: evidence from Ghana

Summary: This paper examines the impact of financial literacy training on household asset accumulation in Ghana. The results show that financial literacy training plays a significant role in the accumulation of both financial and durable assets, especially productive durable assets. The training also has a positive impact on the accumulation of assets in female-beneficiary households, as well as increasing account holdings for females, although the effect is greater for males. Analyses for different age groups reveal that financial literacy training leads to higher asset accumulation among younger household heads.

Austerity is impeding children's education: A qualitative study of the associations of food insecurity and school engagement in Ghana

Summary: The latest round of fiscal austerity in Ghana has led to a frozen and unrealistically low feeding rate for the service providers of Ghana's school feeding programme. This study investigates the impacts of austerity on children's school engagement through semi-structured interviews with school children and focus group discussions with teachers. The findings reveal how the discretionary coping strategies adopted by the service providers affect children's food security, potentially leading to disinterest in classroom activities and an increase in absenteeism and truancy.

Effect of financial inclusion on out-of-pocket health expenditure: empirics from Ghana

Summary: Empirical evidence on the link between financial inclusion and out-of-pocket health expenditure is limited, and this study in Ghana explores this connection using multidimensional financial inclusion index. Results suggest that a standard deviation increase in financial inclusion is associated with an increase in households' out-of-pocket health expenditure, especially for female-headed and urban-located households. Financial inclusion has a stronger association with expenses on medical products/appliances.

Unpacking the black box of global food insecurity and mental health

Summary: Food insecurity is a global concern that is strongly related to poor mental health. While nutrient deficiency impacting brain function and social consequences of food acquisition are posited as mechanisms, this study found no evidence of mediation or association between nutritional status and food insecurity in rural Brazil and urban Ethiopia. The results suggest that food insecurity likely impacts mental health directly through basic needs deprivation.

The impact of remittances on food insecurity: Evidence from Mexico

Financial inclusion and energy poverty: Empirical evidence from Ghana
