Stressful Life Events, Differential Vulnerability, and Depressive Symptoms: Critique and New Evidence

Summary: Prior research suggests that women and less educated individuals are more likely to experience increases in depressive symptoms in response to stressful life events. However, using a new approach, it was found that these apparent differences were due to confounding and in reality, there is no significant difference between men and women in terms of vulnerability to depressive symptoms after stressful events, except for a tentative stronger association among women for events occurring in the household.

Summary: The study found that adolescent stressful life events (SLEs) impact trajectories of depressive symptoms and weight status into adulthood, which in turn jointly influence socioeconomic status and intimate relationship quality. These effects persisted even after controlling for early family socioeconomic adversity and race/ethnicity.

Summary: This study investigates the latent classes of shared developmental problems among adolescents and examines the socioeconomic and genetic influences on these problem trajectories, as well as the physical health consequences. The findings suggest that adolescent heterogeneous problem co-development is associated with background socioeconomic and genetic characteristics, as well as physical health in young adulthood.

Summary: The study found that family financial stress in early-middle years is associated with a reduced sense of control, which in turn affects physical pain in later years. The research also suggests that the impact of family financial stress on physical pain persists over mid-later years. The findings demonstrate how early midlife family financial stress influences the progression of physical pain through a sense of control.
