Understanding the Impact of Home Confinement on Children and Young People with ADHD and ASD During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Longitudinal trajectories of mental health and loneliness for Australian adolescents with-or-without neurodevelopmental disorders: the impact of COVID-19 school lockdowns

Summary: This longitudinal study compared the changes in mental health and loneliness among Western Australian adolescents before, during, and after COVID-19 school lockdowns. The researchers found that adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) did not experience significant increases in mental health problems during the lockdowns, and any increases were temporary. However, non-NDD adolescents showed significant increases in depression symptoms, externalizing symptoms, feelings of isolation, and declines in positive mental wellbeing. The findings suggest that the impacts of school lockdowns on mental health may vary depending on NDD status.

Prospective impact of COVID-19 on mental health functioning in adolescents with and without ADHD: protective role of emotion regulation abilities

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic posed greater mental health risks for adolescents with ADHD. During the pandemic, adolescents experienced an increase in depression, anxiety, and cognitive symptoms, which decreased after the lift of stay-at-home orders.
