Longitudinal trajectories of mental health and loneliness for Australian adolescents with-or-without neurodevelopmental disorders: the impact of COVID-19 school lockdowns

Stephen Houghton et al.

Summary: This longitudinal study compared the changes in mental health and loneliness among Western Australian adolescents before, during, and after COVID-19 school lockdowns. The researchers found that adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) did not experience significant increases in mental health problems during the lockdowns, and any increases were temporary. However, non-NDD adolescents showed significant increases in depression symptoms, externalizing symptoms, feelings of isolation, and declines in positive mental wellbeing. The findings suggest that the impacts of school lockdowns on mental health may vary depending on NDD status.

Review: Mental health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and youth - a systematic review

Hasina Samji et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant negative impact on the mental health of children and adolescents, leading to increased fear, depressive and anxious symptoms compared to before the pandemic. Older adolescents, girls, and those with neurodiversities or chronic physical conditions are more likely to experience adverse mental health outcomes, while factors like physical exercise, access to entertainment, positive familial relationships, and social support are associated with better mental health outcomes.

Prospective impact of COVID-19 on mental health functioning in adolescents with and without ADHD: protective role of emotion regulation abilities

Rosanna Breaux et al.

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic posed greater mental health risks for adolescents with ADHD. During the pandemic, adolescents experienced an increase in depression, anxiety, and cognitive symptoms, which decreased after the lift of stay-at-home orders. Emotion dysregulation and ADHD increased the risk for sustained negative mental health functioning.

Summary: This study compared the participation, support, and barriers for children with ADHD at home pre-COVID-19 and during the COVID-19 outbreak. Results showed a significant increase in participation frequency in activities like computer games, socializing, and household chores during the COVID-19 period. Mothers reported higher involvement levels and easier participation due to reduced cognitive and social demands, as well as more readily available resources in the home environment during the COVID-19 period.
