Subnational debt of China: The politics-finance nexus

Summary: We provide evidence that Chinese local governments selectively default on debt with banks of weaker political power, likely influenced by the banks' impact on politician promotions. When politicians' promotions are less affected by bank defaults, they are less likely to engage in selective default. This suggests a politics-finance nexus in government default behavior.

Economic policy uncertainty, agency problem, and funding structure: Evidence from U.S. banking industry

Political uncertainty and city bank lending in China: Evidence from city government official changes

Summary: Political uncertainty leads to increased bank lending, moderated by government officials' characteristics, bank characteristics, and degree of marketization, resulting in medium-term loan growth in the real estate and public utilities sectors. City government official changes increase bank lending, thereby increasing credit risk with bank lending serving as a mediating factor.

Political Cycles in Bank Lending to the Government

Summary: The turnover of political parties after state elections in Germany leads to a significant increase in lending by local savings banks to their home-state government, coupled with a decrease in private lending. However, this statistical association is absent for comparable cooperative banks with a similar regional organization and business model. The results suggest that political frictions may impact government-owned banks' local development goals.
