Perceived Executive Functioning Deficits After Diagnosis in Women with Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer Prior to Adjuvant Therapies

Prospective Rates, Longitudinal Associations, and Factors Associated With Comorbid Insomnia Symptoms and Perceived Cognitive Impairment

Summary: BackgroundInsomnia and cognitive impairment are common conditions in cancer patients. This study aimed to estimate comorbid insomnia and perceived cognitive impairments, examine their longitudinal associations, and identify associated factors. MethodsA sample of 962 patients completed questionnaires at baseline and follow-ups. Correlations and cross-lagged correlations were computed to assess relationships. Proportions of patients with comorbid insomnia and cognitive impairments were calculated, and logistic regressions were conducted. ResultsSignificant bidirectional correlations were observed over time. The proportion of patients with comorbid insomnia and cognitive impairments ranged from 18.73% to 25.84%. Younger age, female gender, unemployment, chemotherapy, depression and anxiety symptoms, and medication use were associated with comorbid conditions. ConclusionComorbid insomnia and perceived cognitive impairment affects around one in five cancer patients, and the relationship between them appears to be bidirectional. Identifying and treating insomnia may improve perception of cognitive function.

Associating persistent self-reported cognitive decline with neurocognitive decline in older breast cancer survivors using machine learning: The Thinking and Living with Cancer study

Summary: This study used a machine learning approach to examine the association between self-reported cognitive symptoms and neurocognitive test performance in older breast cancer survivors. The results showed that persistent self-reported cognitive problems were associated with declines in multiple neurocognitive measures, including learning ability, verbal fluency, and attention.

Subjective cognitive impairment is more prevalent than objective impairments. Summary: Individuals with NSDI demonstrated greater working memory inconsistency, despite no laboratory assessed sleep problems, implicating early signs of pathophysiology other than disturbed sleep. Those with SSDI demonstrated different sleep architecture, poorer attention (inconsistency), and greater executive function (inconsistency) compared to healthy-sleepers and those with NSDI, implicating sleep disturbance in the disease process of this phenotype.
