The impact of information and communication technology, financial development, and energy consumption on carbon dioxide emission: evidence from the Belt and Road countries

Liu Weili et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of ICT, energy consumption, economic growth, and financial development on carbon emission in Belt and Road countries from 2000 to 2019. The results show that ICT, financial development, energy consumption, and economic growth increase carbon dioxide emission, while renewable energy use and international trade reduce it. Foreign direct investment has both positive and negative effects on carbon emission.

Summary: This study re-examined the relationship between poverty and the environment from a causality perspective by using the ecological footprint as a measure of environmental quality. The results showed a bidirectional causality relationship between poverty and ecological footprint in the global panel and the African region, but no causality was detected in the developing countries of the Asian and Latin American & Caribbean regions.

Political instability and youths unemployment in sub-Saharan Africa

Benjamin Fomba Kamga et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study is to analyze the effects of political instability on youth unemployment in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on the channels through which it affects the unemployment rate. The empirical analysis, covering a period from 2000 to 2016 and a sample of 23 countries, reveals that political instability increases youth unemployment, underemployment, and labor underutilization in sub-Saharan Africa. The identified transmission channels include foreign direct investment, domestic investment, gross domestic product, government spending, human capital, and labor market flexibility. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing political instability as a priority in tackling youth unemployment in sub-Saharan Africa.

Harnessing digital technologies for poverty reduction. Evidence for low-income and lower-middle income countries

Ewa Lechman et al.

Summary: This paper contributes to understanding the relationship between ICT deployment and poverty alleviation in developing countries. By assessing the contribution of digital technologies to poverty reduction through various channels such as education, labor market, income, and ICT trade, it provides insights on the significant drivers of poverty eradication in developing economies, including growing ICT deployment, school enrolments, and increases in material wealth. However, the impact of digitalization on poverty is neither direct nor immediate, highlighting the importance of considering ICT as a key element of development strategies.

Does Financial Development Reduce the Poverty Gap?

Jakob de Haan et al.

Summary: Financial development may impact poverty indirectly through income inequality and economic growth, with different effects observed when using different poverty lines. Financial instability does not seem to affect poverty directly, and the overall impact of financial development on poverty can be positive or negative depending on the strength of the indirect effects. These results are consistent across various robustness checks.
