Financing sustainable development? The role of foreign aid in Southeast Asia's energy transition

Paul Bertheau et al.

Summary: The rapid deployment of modern renewable energy generation capacity is crucial for Southeast Asia to meet its increasing future energy demand sustainably. International cooperation and foreign aid are needed to assist many countries in developing sustainable energy sources. Japan, South Korea, and China, as key donor states, have significantly contributed to energy-related aid in the region, but have contradicted their international pledges by financing fossil-fuel power generation projects in some countries.

Summary: This study evaluates recent scientific literature and national practice related to the use of science-based approaches to support national implementation of SDGs. However, these methods have not been widely applied in Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs).
