Summary: Data on cannabis use in Brazil is limited. A cross-sectional internet-based survey was conducted to assess cannabis use patterns and health outcomes in Brazil. The study found that early initiation of cannabis, high frequency of use, and using cannabis with other substances may elevate the risk for cannabis use disorder.

Use of alcohol and illicit drugs by trauma patients in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence of alcohol and illicit drug use among patients with traumatic injuries admitted to an emergency department in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The results showed that alcohol and illicit drug use was common among injured patients in Sao Paulo, with a higher detection rate in males, the 18-39 age group, singles, and patients injured at nighttime.

Mental health and quality of life in a population of recreative cannabis users in Brazil

Summary: This study investigated the use of cannabis among 7405 Brazilian adults, revealing that habitual cannabis users had the highest quality of life scores, while dysfunctional users were the most affected. Non-users reported more symptoms of depression or anxiety compared to occasional and habitual users.

Factors associated with violence against women by an intimate partner in Northeast Brazil

Summary: This study found that in primary care centres in Northeast Brazil, 65.4% of women have experienced violence from an intimate partner, and this violence is associated with education level, religion, and substance use. Primary care providers have a responsibility to detect, screen, counsel, and treat women who have experienced intimate partner violence.

Summary: The study reviewed the possible outcomes of co-use of cannabis/cannabinoids and cocaine, finding protective effects of CBD on animal models but inconsistent effects in human studies. Clinical trials showed no impact of CBD administration on cocaine treatment outcomes, and co-use of cannabis by cocaine users posed enhanced harms.

Prevalence and Correlates of Driving Under the Influence of Cannabis in the US

Summary: The study found that the annual prevalence of driving under the influence of cannabis among U.S. adults is 4.5%, while among cannabis users the proportion is 29.5%. Individuals with more frequent cannabis use have a higher risk of driving under the influence. Among those with symptoms suggesting a cannabis use disorder, the prevalence of driving under the influence of cannabis is 63.8%.

Cannabis use in adolescence and risk of psychosis: Are there factors that moderate this relationship? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: Adolescent cannabis use is associated with an increased risk for psychosis later in life, with factors such as age of onset, frequency of use, childhood trauma, concurrent substance use, and genetic factors moderating this relationship. Further research is needed to fully understand the interaction between these factors and psychosis risk.

Summary: Hair analysis was conducted on patients who attempted suicide to investigate their use of psychoactive substances, with 30.3% of samples testing positive for at least one substance such as cocaine, codeine, and marijuana. Cannabis Use and Car Crashes: A Review

Summary: Studies indicate a slightly increased risk of traffic crashes after acute cannabis use, particularly with high THC blood concentrations. Most studies do not support a relationship between lower THC concentrations and crash risk. Further research is needed to determine the dose-response effects on driving skills and crash risk.

Co-use and Mixing Tobacco With Cannabis Among Ontario Adults

Summary: The study found that the co-use of cigarettes and cannabis among cannabis users has declined since 1996. The only predictor of co-use was past-year e-cigarette use. From 2015 to 2017, 31.1% of Ontario adults who used cannabis reported mixing it with tobacco in the past year. Significant predictors of mixing included being white, past-year e-cigarette use, having moderate or high nicotine dependence, and having moderate or high risk for cannabis problems.

Opioid use, regulation, and harms in Brazil: a comprehensive narrative overview of available data and indicators

Summary: Global opioid consumption has increased significantly post-2000, with high-income countries experiencing the greatest increase. Brazil, with relatively low opioid availability in Latin America, has implemented restrictive regulations on opioid prescribing and is considered moderately consuming within the region. Despite an increase in non-medical use of prescription opioids, illicit opioid use remains rare in Brazil compared to North America.
