How Global Is Your Mutual Fund? International Diversification from Multinationals

Irem Demirci et al.

Summary: Our study reveals that mutual funds worldwide gain substantial international exposure by holding domestic shares of multinationals, and funds with higher indirect international exposure tend to perform better. This positive effect is primarily driven by fund managers' ability to invest in multinationals, rather than the performance of those multinationals.

Product differentiation in the socially responsible mutual fund industry

Mercedes Alda et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of product differentiation on prices and client attraction in the socially responsible mutual fund industry. The findings suggest that text differentiation measure better explains the product differentiation impact on prices and flows. Younger SR funds and funds belonging to smaller families are more differentiated, which allows them to charge higher fees and attract more money flows. SR fund investors are sensitive to differentiation regarding other funds implementing the same SR strategies, but not in relation to other funds in the same Morningstar financial style category.

Ethical window dressing: SRI funds are as good as their word

Fernando Munoz et al.

Summary: This research examined the presence of ethical window dressing in socially responsible investment (SRI) domestic equity funds registered in the US market. The study compared the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) attributes of disclosed and undisclosed portfolios. The findings suggest that there is no significant difference in the ESG portfolio image between reporting and non-reporting months. Although residual signals of ethical window dressing were identified in portfolio trading, none of these signals corresponded to easily interpretable information. Therefore, SRI funds do not manipulate the disclosed ESG image to attract money flows.

Do global equity mutual funds exhibit home bias?

Takato Hiraki et al.

Summary: Our study on U.S. global equity mutual funds reveals that, on average, there is no home bias but significant cross-fund variation. Fund manager teams with foreign educational background, younger managers, and those with MBA degrees tend to invest more internationally. Home-biased and foreign-biased funds tend to outperform medium decile funds and hold concentrated portfolios, supporting the information hypothesis for both types of bias. Additionally, high-performing foreign-biased funds are generally larger, suggesting no decreasing returns to scale in global equity mutual funds.
