Sustainable production of ethyl levulinate by levulinic acid esterification obtained from Colombian rice straw

Cristhian Canon et al.

Summary: Ethyl levulinate, a fuel additive derived from agricultural waste such as rice straw, has the potential to be a feasible alternative to traditional fuels. This study assessed the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of producing ethyl levulinate from Colombian rice straw. An alternative scenario was proposed to reduce environmental impacts, resulting in significant improvements in carbon footprint and ozone depletion. Additionally, the economic assessment showed positive financial indicators for the alternative scenario.

Bio-based process for the catalytic production of ethyl levulinate from cellulose

Juyeon Kim et al.

Summary: The study presents a bio-based process for catalytic conversion of cellulose to ethyl levulinate and analyzes its techno-economic feasibility. Experimental results show that the process can achieve high ethyl levulinate yields but requires complex recycling procedures for used catalyst and solvent.

Techno-economic assessment of one-stage furfural and cellulosic ethanol co-production from sugarcane bagasse and harvest residues feedstock mixture

Rhulani N. Ntimbani et al.

Summary: The study investigated the co-production of furfural and ethanol in a biorefinery connected to a sugar mill, comparing scenarios of furfural-only, ethanol-only, and integrated furfural-ethanol production. The integrated biorefinery showed higher profitability compared to ethanol-only production, with furfural-only production being the most profitable due to lower capital investments and bypass. Economic benefits of furfural and ethanol co-production were limited by process energy demands and feedstock availability.
