Environmental regulation and its influence on energy-environmental performance: Evidence on the Porter Hypothesis from China's iron and steel industry

Rongxin Wu et al.

Summary: The study reveals a U-shaped relationship between environmental regulation and the energy-environmental performance of the iron and steel industry: low regulation intensity hinders performance improvement, while increased regulation intensity contributes to enhancement. Environmental regulation impacts industrial energy-environmental performance through technological innovation, and regional variations in the impact of regulation on energy-environmental performance are noticeable.

The impact of heterogeneous environmental regulation on the energy eco-efficiency of China's energy-mineral cities

Shengnan Cui et al.

Summary: The study found that different environmental regulations have varying effects on China's energy eco-efficiency, and there is a threshold effect. Energy eco-efficiency in the eastern region showed the most significant growth. Compulsory and market-incentive environmental regulations inhibit energy eco-efficiency, while voluntary environmental regulations have a time lag effect. The study suggests improving environmental regulation tools through enhancing environmental information disclosure, eco-welfare-oriented appraisal, and rewards and punishments for technological innovation.

How does urban environmental legislation guide the green transition of enterprises? Based on the perspective of enterprises? green total factor productivity

Bingbing Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper uses a dynamic slack-based measure model to calculate an enterprise's green total factor productivity (GTFP) and investigates the impact of urban environmental legislation on the green transition of enterprises. The results show that implementing urban environmental legislation significantly improves the GTFP of enterprises, especially for non-state-owned enterprises, enterprises with low financing constraints, and enterprises located in specific regions.

Does more stringent environmental regulation induce firms' innovation? Evidence from the 11th Five-year plan in China

Xinze Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of stricter environmental regulation on firms' innovation using China's 11th Five-Year Plan as a quasi-natural experiment. The results support the Porter Hypothesis, showing that stricter environmental regulation leads to an increase in patent applications by industrial firms in China. Furthermore, the study also finds heterogenous effects based on ownership, industrial characteristics, and firm size.

The effect of environmental regulation on green total-factor productivity in China's industry

Zhonghua Cheng et al.

Summary: This study employs different methods to estimate the industrial total factor productivity (GTFP) and its decomposition in 30 Chinese provinces from 2000 to 2019. It also uses a dynamic spatial panel model to test the effects of policy, action mechanisms, and environmental regulations on GTFP. The results indicate that a combination of policies is more conducive to GTFP growth. Further analysis reveals that command-and-control environmental regulations improve technical efficiency and narrow the technical gap, while market-based environmental regulations accelerate GTFP growth through technological advancements and a reduction in the technological gap.

Assessing the role of environmental regulations in improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions: Evidence from the logistics industry

Bin Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence mechanism of incentive and mandatory environmental regulations on energy efficiency and CO2 emissions in the logistics industry. Using quantile regression and panel data from 30 provinces in China, the research finds that incentive environmental regulations have a greater contribution to CO2 emission reduction in certain provinces, while mandatory environmental regulations have a varied impact on CO2 emission reduction and energy efficiency depending on the provinces.

Environmental regulation, green technology innovation, and industrial structure upgrading: The road to the green transformation of Chinese cities

Kerui Du et al.

Summary: The study finds that the impact of environmental regulation on green technology innovation and industrial structure is related to economic development levels, with a low economic development level potentially inhibiting green technology innovation, but having an insignificant impact on industrial structure upgrading; as economic development levels grow, the impact of environmental regulation on green technology innovation and industrial structure weakens; when economic development levels are high, environmental regulation significantly promotes green technology innovation and industrial structure upgrading.

Does economic development help achieve the goals of environmental regulation? Evidence from partially linear functional-coefficient model

Ailun Wang et al.

Summary: The study finds that economic development is a prerequisite for environmental regulations to take effect, and certain thresholds of GDP per capita need to be reached in order to achieve environmental goals. Some cities are able to increase green productivity through environmental regulations, while others can reduce pollution without hampering economic outputs.

Environmental policies and energy efficiency investments. An industry-level analysis

Jose Garcia-Quevedo et al.

Summary: Increasing energy efficiency is considered a cost-effective way to reduce air emissions and improve economic performance in manufacturing industries, but the effectiveness of policies to promote the adoption of energy-saving technologies remains inconclusive. This paper aims to study the impact of different environmental policy measures on energy efficiency investments, analyzing data from Spanish industries between 2010 and 2017. Four main instruments are considered: regulation, taxes, subsidies, and tax credits.

Research on the green total factor productivity of laying hens in China

Shen Zhong et al.

Summary: The study found that China's laying hens breeding has the highest productivity in medium scale, followed by small scale and large scale; in terms of regions, there is a reverse stair-step distribution in China's LHBG, with the lowest in the eastern region, followed by the central region and the highest in the western region; the three decomposition efficiencies of LHBG show a decrease in management efficiency, an increase in scale structure efficiency, and an improvement in technical efficiency.
