Natural resource and economic growth nexus in Nigeria: a disaggregated approach

Nasiru Inuwa et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of natural resource rents on economic growth in Nigeria from 1981 to 2017. The results show that oil and forest rents have a negative effect on economic growth, supporting the resource curse hypothesis. However, natural gas, coal, and mineral rents have a positive effect on economic growth. Additionally, financial development stimulates economic growth. Therefore, the government should use resource rents wisely and invest in other sectors to stimulate economic growth.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between energy (oil) consumption and economic growth with a focus on natural resources endowments. Findings suggest that resource-rich countries may face the issue of resource curse, while resource-poor countries are challenged by the scarcity of energy resources. The study utilizes different estimators to confirm the results and reveals the varied impacts of oil consumption on economic growth in different country groups.
