Epidural labour analgesia and autism spectrum disorder: is the current evidence sufficient to dismiss an association?

Alexander J. Butwick et al.

Summary: Findings from a population-based study suggest that epidural labor analgesia is not linked to an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder. These results are consistent with three other population-based studies that utilized similar research methods. Overall, these high-quality epidemiological data support the conclusion that there is no significant association between epidural labor analgesia and autism spectrum disorder in offspring.

Summary: This narrative review explores important areas of research surrounding epidural analgesia in obstetric patients, including methods of initiation and administration, choice of local anesthetic solution, and the addition of adjuvants. Summary: This study investigated the association between parental rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the risks of mental disorders in their offspring. The results showed that maternal RA was associated with increased risks of multiple mental disorders in their children, particularly autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Summary: This study found that intrapartum epidural analgesia was associated with a small increase in the risk of ASD in offspring. However, the biological plausibility of this association remains unclear, and caution should be exercised when interpreting the findings.

Association of Epidural Analgesia During Labor and Delivery With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Offspring

Gillian E. Hanley et al.

Summary: Maternal use of epidural analgesia during labor and delivery was found to be associated with a small increase in the risk of autism spectrum disorder in offspring in this population-based retrospective cohort study. However, due to potential residual confounding factors, these findings do not provide strong supporting evidence for this association.

Summary: Oral vitamin C supplementation may reduce the risk of complex regional pain syndrome type I in orthopedic patients, but does not improve functional outcomes. Further large-scale clinical studies are needed to support these findings due to the limited number of trials included in the meta-analysis.
