THE CITIES WE CALL HOME: Indigeneity, Race and Settler-Colonial Urbanisms

Summary: The connection between Indigeneity and urban spaces has been overlooked in urban studies and Indigenous studies, despite the fact that the majority of Indigenous people in the United States live in cities. Recent scholars have started to explore the link between settler colonialism, racial capitalism, and urban environments. This essay examines how the dispossession of Indigenous peoples has influenced urban development and highlights the contributions of Indigenous peoples and culture in reclaiming and challenging urban dispossession, particularly through their interactions with African Americans in Detroit.
