Fatigue from Defect: Influence of Size, Type, Position, Morphology and Loading

Yves Nadot

Summary: After analyzing a large experimental database, the paper indicates that the effect of defect on the fatigue limit should be described through 5 major parameters depending on the material. It also discusses a fatigue criterion that describes the impact of defects through local stress gradients, with an identification process showing that each of the 5 major parameters can be considered.

Effect of process parameters on microstructures and properties of Al-42Si alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

Xiaoye Cai et al.

Summary: In this study, high-silicon Al-42Si alloy was prepared using selective laser melting (SLM) with different process parameters. The microstructure evolution and defects formation were investigated, and the process parameters were optimized. It was found that the density and hardness of the SLM-fabricated alloy increased with the increase of input energy density. Heat treatment improved the microstructure stability and homogeneity of the SLM-fabricated alloy. The optimal SLM parameters for the Al-42Si alloy were determined.

Effects of manufacturing parameters and mechanical post-processing on stainless steel 316L processed by laser powder bed fusion

Shahriar Afkhami et al.

Summary: Stainless steel 316L is commonly used in additive manufacturing, particularly via L-PBF, due to its strength-ductility synergy and corrosion resistance. While the material performs well under static, cyclic, and impact loads, further machining or post-processing may be needed to enhance its fatigue performance under cyclic loading.

Fatigue behavior of additive manufactured 316L stainless steel under axial versus rotating-bending loading: Synergistic effects of stress gradient, surface roughness, and volumetric defects

Rakish Shrestha et al.

Summary: The study found that the fatigue behavior of LB-PBF 316L SS largely depends on the stress amplitude, with rotating-bending specimens showing better fatigue resistance at higher stress amplitudes compared to axial specimens. At lower stress amplitudes, surface roughness and volumetric defects become significant factors limiting the life of LB-PBF 316L SS.

Optimization of surface roughness and dimensional accuracy in LPBF additive manufacturing

Longchao Cao et al.

Summary: The study introduced a data-driven framework to obtain optimal process parameters for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) in order to achieve satisfactory surface roughness and dimensional accuracy. Machine learning techniques were used to predict the accuracy and surface roughness of LPBF products under different process parameters combinations, leading to the use of a whale optimization algorithm to search for the global optimal process parameters. The experiments verified that LPBF parts with better surface finish and dimensional accuracy could be obtained with the optimized process parameters.

Battery-free, wireless soft sensors for continuous multi-site measurements of pressure and temperature from patients at risk for pressure injuries

Yong Suk Oh et al.

Summary: Continuous monitoring of pressure and temperature at skin interfaces can minimize the risk of pressure injuries in hospitalized or bedridden patients. This paper introduces a soft, skin-mountable sensor system that has been demonstrated to be functional and stable through patient trials.
