Laboratory investigation of pullout behavior of hollow and solid shaft helical nail in frictional soil

Pankaj Sharma et al.

Summary: Helical soil nails are passive elements installed in soil to achieve bond strength through skin friction and bearing from helices. The study examines the behavior of helical soil nails in cohesionless soil under pullout force, with findings on installation torque, pullout capacity, helical pitch, and interaction friction angle. It is concluded that solid shaft helical nails can be replaced by hollow nails without compromising on pullout capacity, leading to cost reduction.

Force-Displacement Characteristics of Helical Soil Nail under Monotonic Pullout Loading: Experimental and Theoretical Study

Pankaj Sharma et al.

Summary: The study investigates the shear stress-displacement behavior of helical soil nails under different overburden pressure and monotonic pullout loading, showing mobilization of nonlinear stresses and a pre-peak and post-peak stage in the stress-displacement behavior. Solid HSN exhibited higher shear stress mobilization compared to hollow ones, and the developed theoretical model demonstrated good agreement with measured values for overburden pressure between 5 and 50 kPa. The axial strain results indicated strain softening during post-peak, particularly diminishing in group behavior due to truncated cone rupture failure.
