Me and Others Around: The Roles of Personal and Social Norms in Chinese Adolescent Bystanders' Responses Toward Cyberbullying

Jianning Dang et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that bystanders play a vital role in cyberbullying, as their responses are influenced by moral engagement and personal and social norms. This study examines how these norms affect Chinese high-school students' responses to cyberbullying, and reveals that personal and social norms can predict intentions to help the victim or reinforce the bully. The findings provide insight into the process of adolescents adapting to norms and offer guidance for interventions in cyberbullying.

Was that (cyber)bullying? Investigating the operational definitions of bullying and cyberbullying from adolescents' perspective

Damiano Menin et al.

Summary: The study found common traits and differences in the operational definitions of bullying and cyberbullying provided by adolescent victims and perpetrators, with dominance being the most relevant criterion for the perception of both phenomena. The imbalance of power showed no significant relationship with the perception of being bullied or bullying others both offline and online. This emphasizes young people conceptualize bullying with a clear reference to relational and group processes rather than individual differences.

Standing up or standing by: Bystander intervention in cyberbullying on social media

Sai Wang

Summary: The severity of cyberbullying influences bystanders' empathic responses and willingness to intervene, with highly empathetic bystanders being more likely to intervene. The indirect effect of cyberbullying severity on intervention willingness through empathy is more pronounced when the interpersonal similarity between victim and bystander is low.
