The Efficiency of Lemon Essential Oil-Based Nanoemulsions on the Inhibition of Phomopsis sp. and Reduction of Postharvest Decay of Kiwifruit

Fan-Bing Meng et al.

Summary: Essential oils have antibacterial activity and are safe, but their application is limited due to volatility and oxidation. Encapsulation of essential oils into nanoemulsions can prevent oxidation. Lemon essential oil-based nanoemulsion has good stability at room temperature and effectively inhibits the growth of soft rot pathogens in kiwifruit. It can be used to prevent postharvest decay of kiwifruit caused by Phomopsis sp.

Microencapsulation of carvacrol as an efficient tool to fight Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis biofilms

Samah Mechmechani et al.

Summary: Biofilms pose serious challenges in medical and food industries due to their resistance to antimicrobial agents. This study demonstrates that spray-drying can enhance the activity of carvacrol against bacterial biofilms. Results show that encapsulated carvacrol has a lower minimum inhibitory concentration and can effectively reduce biofilm formation, indicating its strong antimicrobial effect against biofilms.

Evaluation of the combined effect of antibiotics and essential oils against Campylobacter multidrug resistant strains and their biofilm formation

Aicha El Baaboua et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of four essential oils against multidrug-resistant Campylobacter strains and investigated the synergistic effect of essential oils with antibiotics, as well as the ability of the strains to form biofilm. The results showed that O. compactum, M. pulegium, and L. stoechas essential oils had a significant inhibitory impact on Campylobacter strains, and the combination of essential oils with antibiotics enhanced the antimicrobial effect.

Ultrasound improves the decontamination effect of thyme essential oil nanoemulsions against Escherichia coli 0157: H7 on cherry tomatoes

Qiao He et al.

Summary: The development of novel decontamination technologies to ensure the microbiological safety of fresh produce has received considerable attention. This study introduced a method using hurdle technologies to sanitize artificially contaminated cherry tomatoes, demonstrating the remarkable antimicrobial activity of thyme essential oil nanoemulsion combined with ultrasound against E. coli O157:H7. The synergistic effects of the combined treatments effectively reduced bacterial populations and minimized cross-contamination in wastewater, without altering the quality characteristics of cherry tomatoes.

Zingiber zerumbet L. essential oil-based chitosan nanoemulsion as an efficient green preservative against fungi and aflatoxin B1 contamination

Deepika et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of ZEO-CsNE as a green antimicrobial preservative against Aspergillus flavus, aflatoxin B-1, and lipid peroxidation of stored functional foods. ZEO-CsNE exhibited antifungal and antiaflatoxigenic mechanisms, while also inhibiting lipid peroxidation in postharvest seeds. This research suggests ZEO-CsNE as a safer alternative for in vitro and in situ protection of functional food samples.

Encapsulation of Manuka Essential Oil in Yeast Microcarriers for Enhanced Thermal Stability and Antimicrobial activity

Shanshan Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of cell-based encapsulation for Manuka essential oil (MEO) to improve its thermal stability and antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus in an organic-rich aqueous environment. Encapsulated MEO showed controlled release and significantly higher efficacy in inactivating bacteria compared to non-encapsulated MEO. The findings suggest the potential of utilizing rapid and non-thermal vacuum infusion method for encapsulating MEO in yeast microcarriers for food and agricultural applications.

Raffaella Scotti et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential of various essential oils in inhibiting the growth and gene expression of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7. It was found that Cymbopogon martini essential oil had the ability to suppress biofilm formation and gene expression, with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.0075%. Additionally, the essential oils were able to impact zinc homeostasis and reduce the infectivity of E. coli O157:H7.

Essential oils and their nanoformulations as green preservatives to boost food safety against mycotoxin contamination of food commodities: a review

Bijendra Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: The review extensively discusses the application of essential oils (EOs) and their nanoformulated products as novel green preservatives against foodborne molds and mycotoxin-induced deterioration of stored food commodities. While essential oils are considered promising alternatives to synthetic preservatives, their practical application faces challenges, which nanotechnology is emerging as a novel technology to overcome. Nanoencapsulation of EOs is currently being practiced to improve the stability and bioactivity of natural products, providing a potential solution for the challenges associated with EO application.

A biophysical limit for quorum sensing in biofilms

Avaneesh V. Narla et al.

Summary: Bacteria form complex immobile communities called biofilms, where they interact and compete via quorum sensing (QS) by producing and detecting small molecules called autoinducers (AIs). A study explored the competitive advantage of QS in biofilms and found that the effectiveness of QS strategies is influenced by nutrient availability and the dynamic range of AI concentrations in biofilms is limited by biophysical constraints.

Comprehensive Evaluation on the Use of Thymus vulgaris Essential Oil as Natural Additive against Different Serotypes of Salmonella enterica

Abdelaziz Ed-Dra et al.

Summary: Essential oils, particularly Thymus vulgaris essential oil (TV-EO) from Morocco, have been found to possess significant antioxidant and antibacterial activities against different serotypes of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica, making them suitable for ensuring food safety and quality in line with sustainable trends. The chemical composition of TV-EO, including its most representative compound thymol, was analyzed through hydrodistillation and GC-MS analysis. Mathematical models were used to predict the behavior of Salmonella exposed to TV-EO, which showed consistent results with experimental findings including in situ antimicrobial activity and sensory preservation in contaminated poultry meat.
