Barriers to delivering trauma-focused interventions for people with psychosis and post-traumatic stress disorder: A qualitative study of health care professionals' views

Eleanor Chadwick et al.

Summary: This study identified three main barriers to the use of trauma-focused interventions among people with psychosis and PTSD: coherent understanding, structural support, and safe space. To facilitate the use of trauma-focused interventions, attention should be paid to integrating discussion of trauma into the clinical discourse of services, facilitating access to treatment through processes and organizational culture, and providing training to clinicians to enhance confidence and skills.

Safety of psychological interventions for adult post-traumatic stress disorder: meta-analysis on the incidence and relative risk of deterioration, adverse events and serious adverse events

Thole H. Hoppen et al.

Summary: The current evidence suggests that psychological interventions are safe for most adults with PTSD. Psychological interventions are not associated with an increased risk of harm compared with control conditions, and trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is as safe as other psychological interventions. Individual face-to-face delivery may be the safest format, but more data are needed for firmer conclusions.

Trauma-focused imaginal exposure for auditory hallucinations: A case series

Rachel M. Brand et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that traumatic life events contribute to auditory hallucinations, and exposure-based trauma-focused therapies targeting trauma memory intrusions may be a promising treatment. A single-arm case series of imaginal exposure intervention for trauma-related AH showed feasibility and acceptability, with a significant reduction in AH severity at one-month follow-up. However, temporary distress and symptom exacerbation were common, suggesting the need for further research and consideration of therapy delivery.

Does Exposure Exacerbate Symptoms in Veterans With PTSD and Alcohol Use Disorder?

Jessica C. Tripp et al.

Results showed that few participants experienced exacerbation in symptoms, suggesting that exposure therapy did not lead to more clinical exacerbation than nonexposure therapy.

Treatment Guidelines for PTSD: A Systematic Review

Alicia Martin et al.

Summary: Most international treatment guidelines for post-traumatic stress disorder recommend both psychological and pharmacological therapies as first-line treatments, with cognitive behavioural therapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors being the most recommended. However, targeted treatment of nightmares as a symptom of PTSD is not adequately addressed in most guidelines.
