NEOLOCALISM- AND GLOCALIZATION-RELATED FACTORS BEHIND THE EMERGENCE AND EXPANSION OF CRAFT BREWERIES IN CZECH AND POLISH REGIONS

Jiri Hasman et al.

Summary: Craft breweries in North America and Europe have experienced significant growth in recent decades. While neolocalism has been thought to be the main factor, this view may be too simplistic as it depends on spatial context. Factors like glocalization may also play a role in the emergence of craft breweries. This study examined the expansion of craft breweries in seven regions of Czechia and Poland, finding similarities and differences influenced by neolocalism and spatial context.

The local dimension of legitimation: an empirical analysis of firms' entry in the Italian craft beer market

Christian Garavaglia et al.

Summary: Legitimation is a local phenomenon that stimulates the emergence of new firms, but it is offset by competition as the number of firms increases. The effects of legitimation and competition are more dominant within the municipality than in a larger area. The magnitude of these effects is weaker than what is predicted by conventional regressions, and legitimation has a stronger and quicker impact compared to competition.

Beer leaders against craft brewers: will Goliath end up defeating David in the US?

Martin Alfaro

Summary: The rise of craft brewers in the American beer industry has been unprecedented in the last decade, with market leaders actively working to hinder their growth. Strategic moves by leading firms have targeted craft brewers to disadvantage them, while non-leading macrobrewers are unaffected. Despite the impact of craft brewers on market leaders, strategic maneuvers have helped mitigate the consequences, preventing further losses of market share for AB InBev and Molson Coors.

That's Our Beer! Creating the Contentious Category of Collegiate Beer

Blake D. Mathias et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between contentious category blending and tradition, finding that in instances of controversy, proponents of blended categories strategically interpret tradition in a broader sense to gain support and success. Additionally, it reveals that contentious category proponents draw from history and tradition to demonstrate the existing elements of their product, contrary to the general notion that new categories should emphasize their novelty and distinctiveness.

Watered Down: Market Growth, Authenticity, and Evaluation in Craft Beer

Jo-Ellen Pozner et al.

Summary: The study challenges the idea that category-spanning organizations face penalties in evaluations, suggesting that as consumer diversity increases, evaluations become more generous and authenticity norms are less strictly enforced. The research found that overall beer ratings increase and penalties to authenticity norm violations decrease as the number of new reviewers participating in the evaluative process rises.
