Is Distance Really Dead in the Online World? The Moderating Role of Geographical Distance on the Effectiveness of Electronic Word of Mouth

Vilma Todri et al.

Summary: The authors investigate the relationship between geographical distance among online users and the effectiveness of electronic word-of-mouth. They find that followers' likelihood to make purchases after being exposed to users' WOM increases with geographic proximity. Social identification is proposed as a potential mechanism for why geographical distance still matters in eWOM.

Policy Uncertainty and Customer Concentration

Woon Sau Leung et al.

Summary: The study reveals a negative and statistically significant relationship between economic policy uncertainty and firms' customer-base concentration. Companies respond to increasing policy uncertainty by diversifying their customer base, and this behavior contributes positively to firm performance, particularly in industries with higher inventory efficiency and in competitive, high-R&D, and nondurable sectors.

Whither geographic proximity? Bypassing local R&D units in foreign university collaboration

Rene Belderbos et al.

Summary: The study analyzing 13,000 research collaborations between major biopharmaceutical firms and foreign universities found that the choice between distant and local collaboration is systematically related to the knowledge capabilities of the firms' R&D units, the characteristics of the focal knowledge, and local knowledge leakage risks. It confirmed that distant collaboration occurs when firms can benefit from scale and knowledge diversity advantages, when the central unit has strong basic research capabilities, and when collaboration is in a core research domain of the MNC while rival firms are locally present.
